Rush Limbaugh: Lowery 'just insulted this country'

  Posted: January 20, 2009
8:58 pm Eastern

By Chelsea Schilling
Outrage is erupting over the inauguration benediction by Rev. Joseph Lowery, an 87-year-old civil rights pioneer, for asking God to help mankind work for a day when "white would embrace what is right."
Lowery, known for co-founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr., asked God to encourage America to make "choices on the side of love, not hate, on the side of inclusion not exclusion, tolerance not intolerance" after President Barack Obama took the presidential oath. Then he ended his prayer with, "Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around when yellow will be mellow when the red man can get ahead, man and when white will embrace what is right."
Obama reacted to the benediction with a smile.
The crowd cheered and boomed with a loud "Amen."
However, talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said Lowery's prayer "offended" and was "far more memorable than the inaugural address by President Obama."
Referring to Lowery's "When black will not be asked to get in back" comment, Limbaugh responded, "When does that happen today? Did we not just inaugurate a black man as president of the United States?"
Limbaugh went through each statement about color, attempting to decipher Lowery's intended message.
"I know it's a left over from the '60s thing," he said. "It's not relevant today! Everybody here is living in the past, and they don't want anybody to think we've made any progress at all despite inaugurating Barack Obama as president today."
Repeating Lowery's "When white will embrace what is right" statement, Limbaugh said, "He just insulted this country, large numbers of which elected Barack Obama president of the United States."
Several angry bloggers posted reactions to Lowery's prayer, including the following:
 • Didn't whites just do that by electing Jesus Christ president?
 • Am I allowed to be offended?
 • Race card pulled during the inauguration. Wow that didn't take long.
 • It is completely inappropriate to have that in any prayer, much less a prayer at an inauguration that is supposed to be about how "We're all one."
 • Black brown red yellow white? I'm stunned. The prayer is so racist and so inappropriate. Is Rev. Lowery just a kinder, gentler Rev. Wright?
 • You guys are all spelling it wrong. That's the problem. I'm sure that if you look at his notes you'll see that it says " whites will embrace what is Wright."

Yeah, I was taken back a little by that as well.  But I suppose we have to remember that he is from the south and I have white friends living in the south that are still as racists as people were in the 60's.   There is still a lot of work to be done on both fronts in the deep south.

Setting the tone for the future.  Better not disagree with this administration's policies.  If you do, you will be labeled a racist.  Listen closely to what was said in the prayers.

I would expect that from him, he is after all of the old school in the south.  It is what he has known all his life.  However, I'm surprised that Obama's people let it go.  I'm pretty sure they were able to OK both prayers that were spoken.
When I was young, I wanted to be older.  This is not what I expected!

Fake outrage continues.

Rush must know he needs the fake outrage for his ratings.

No outrage at all from me.  Just an observation and perhaps a prediction in there.

Everyone....be sure and check with Winston to see if you are really upset or if it is fake.

He is the expert on what is real and what is fake.  I really wish you people would remember that.

Thanks for the tip Dave.  I guess this little excerpt from a "prayer" is NOT racist?  Please enlighten us Winston.

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around -- (laughter) -- when yellow will be mellow -- (laughter) -- when the red man can get ahead, man -- (laughter) -- and when white will embrace what is right.

Tell us what is "right" so we can all be as politically correct as you

I thought the prayer was racist towards whites. But they can do that to us, it is ok when they do. Matter of fact it is even funny.  I laugh when they are acting racist towards us while they claim we are racist toward them. It's become the norm.

Hey, those of us with enough free time, like you, have to put it to use somehow.

Like spending your working day posting on a message board.

I'm sure if it were a Democrat the fake outrage would shake the halls.

Since this is the David Day Fanboi Network, though, I'm sure it will be nothing but praise heaped upon you for showing such class and dedication to representing your constituents.

What does message board reading and responding pay a state rep these days?

Is it by the word or is a daily stipend?

I reworded the poem, do you consider it racist now?

Racism isn't about what words come out of what color skinned person's mouth.

It is what is behind it that makes you a racist, not what color skin you have or who/what you are prejudiced against.

But if a black man said my prayer, it is ok, but if a white man does it is bad.

I thought in order to be a racist you had to have the ability to discriminate against someone.  I don't know how many business owners we have on here but most of us are just everyday people who unfortunately "work for the man" and do not have the means to discriminate.  We don't have the capability to determine a persons ability to make a living or get an education.  No matter what I do it's not going to affect another persons ability to do any of these things , thus I cannot be a racist.

Yes Rick.  That is the current politically correct climate.  NO black person can be a racist in the eyes of the all knowing Winston  .  then the person making those remarks yesterday were completely racist...right?  I can see no way around it.

It stereotyped whites, grouped them all into one bundle, therefore it was racist. End of story IMHO.

What the heck Winston....I will bite.  Let's see, I started replying to constitutent e-mails around 5:30am this morning from the apartment, got to the capitol around 7:30am to work there, I posted that post (most would call it a joke) about 12:15pm (and some call that lunch time if you are counting hours), and I will leave the capitol around 9:00 or 10:00 tonight.

Hope that eases your concerns Winston.  Oh yea, my pay is just the same as all other Reps...the posting is free just for you.
