First of all if anyone of any color is walking around a high profile political rally or any other rally he or she should go to jail if nothing more than stupidy. Again, no one on this board knows what happened in this instance we can only speculate. The cop was responding to a call as well he should, but beyond that we simply don't know. It is time the race card was put up by everyone, and that includes the president. As far as I'm concerned he degraded the very office he holds to include himself. The president has no business making comments that he made in a private matter, and yes he did call the police stupid.

He also said, jokingly, that he's probably biased because he knows the professor.

Was the officer stupid for arresting a man lawfully carrying a gun at an Obama rally?

Was the officer stupid for detaining and taking property from the 70 year old openly carrying a gun in a park near a school?

Was the officer stupid for arresting a man in his own home AFTER determining that the man was lawfully in his own home?

*shrug*

All I know is the white folks came running frm the hills to criticize the police for arresting white people with guns, and calling them every name in the book, saying the Constitution is being threatened and America will collapse.

But the black guy saying the white cop was stupid for arresting the black guy in his own home, well that's just reverse racism!

I'd say the racist is the person who doesn't see that in these cases, race and guns probably played a small factor.

The overriding common factor was a little big man officer showing how big and bad he is and arresting (or briefly detaining and searching) people not for the "obvious" reason (gun in public, wait it was legal, gun in public, wait that was legal, man in his own home, wait that is legal), but for essentially pissing off a cop.

So yes, in all three cases, I believe that stupidity was the main factor, among almost everyone involved, if not everyone.

Stupid people doing stupid things and cops overreacting to being dissed.

Yes, I said dissed.

that is how I roll.

Did the President move in with his unasked for 2 cents on those incidents?  In those threads, I don't remember bringing up what color the men were who were accosted illegallly by the cops.  Race was not the issue and was not brought up.  Only when some black friend of Obama is involved does he place his incorrect opinion.  He owes the officer an apology

Race shouldn't be the issue here either. The issuse should be that a man was arrested for nothing.

He was asked at a press conference on other issues specifically about the Harvard professor, someone he knows.

I don't know if he was asked about the other two incidents.

Perhaps you could wait until tomorrow morning's round of talking points from the Republican party hits the message boards to answer.

Or is tomorrow's topic mustard again?

It is called "contempt of cop" Winston and is not associated only with black people.
He was not asked about the other incidents because they involved (gasp) guns and Constitutional rights.  He should have had NO Comment until he had all the facts.  Being a lawyer, he can manufacture his facts as he goes along, much like he does with his explanations of his misuse of our money and healthcare.

"The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?"

Anyone going to an Obama rally should be instituionalized?  Better ask a cop about that particular "crime."  I believe the term was introduced in a Joseph Wambaugh book.  Just somehow seemed appropriate to introduce it since that is what this guy was really guilty of.  besides being an idiot and that is no crime for which he can be arrested either.  He should have been thanking the officer for checking on his house being broken into instead of running off at the mouth with his racist attitude.

Your right that he should of been thanking the officer  insteaded of mouthing off. Still say, what he did is not something he should of been arrested for.

Shady it's real easy to explain, if you are stupid enough to walk around any rally you should be arrested for packing a gun. At least the guns should have been taken and the people allowed to pick them up when they left the area, kind of like gun check in the old west. Again we don't know what took place, but for the record the house the man lives in belongs to Harvard University. I for one am tired of the race card being played by anyone. Don't hide behind the race card, because anyone can be a racist or bigot and it doesn't matter if you are white, black, yellow, or red.

Looks good.  Seems Obama is kind of apologizing.  He even admits he has contributed to the fiasco.  Kind of proud of him for this one.

If it were a white man with a gun at an Obama rally, or in a park near a school, then how would you react?

If you're asking me Winston, I want All violations of the law to be dealt with MAXIMUM PENALITIES.  I believe in equal enforcement under the law.  This race, democrat, republican, sex, gender crap should be off the table, period !!!  That's me !!!  My only social weakness is for our defenseless children, the elderly, and those with reduced mental capacities............

Just because your in your home does not give you the right to disregard a police officers authority. I would expect to be arrested if I showed my ass as well as he did. Only difference I couldnt pull the race card.

If I understood the media correctly the neighbor calls in and said two men are breaking into the house next door. (Did not say my next door neighbor is breaking into his own home. Very bad when your next door neighbor does not know you, does add to the unknown perp bit for the officer) Anyway cop arrives, men tell him yes they broke in but its my house.

Now at that point any officer who did not completely check out the ID and correctness of that statement needed to be fired.

Or, your house is broken into and the officer catches them in the act, then leaves them alone in your house to finish the job just because they said they lived there?

Oh yes I can hear the citizen screams on that one.

From what I understand, this is when things got nasty.

He asked for ID, the homeowner got irate, then it all just fell apart.

35 Things NOT  to Say to a Cop if You're Stopped

1. I can't reach my license unless you hold my beer.

2. Sorry officer, I didn't realize my radar detector wasn't plugged in.

3. Aren't you the guy-from the Village People band?

4. Hey, you must have been doing 125 to keep up with me. Good job.

5. I though you had to be in relatively good physical shape to be a police officer.

6. I was going to be a cop, but I decided to finish high school instead.

7. Bad cop, no donut.

8. You're not going to check the trunk are you?

9. Gee, that gut sure doesn't inspire confidence.

10. Didn't I see you get your butt kicked on COPS?

11. Wow, you look just like the guy in the picture on my girlfriends night stand.

12. Is it true that people become cops because they're too dumb to work at McDonalds?

13. I pay your salary.

14. So uh, you on the take or what?

15. Gee officer, that's terrific. The last officer only gave me a warning.

16. Do you know why you pulled me over? Okay, just so one of us knows.

17. I was trying to keep up with traffic. Yes, I know there are no other cars around, that's how far ahead they are.

18. What do you mean, "Have I been drinking?" YOU'RE the trained specialist.

19. Well officer, when I reached down to pick up my bag of crack, my gun fell off of my lap and got lodged between the brake and the gas pedal, forcing me to speed out of control.

20. Hey, is that a 9mm? That's nothing compared to this 44 magnum.

21. Hey, can you give me another one of those full cavity searches?

22. No, YOU assume the position.

23. I'm surprised you stopped me, Dunkin Donuts is having a 3 for 1 special!

24. If I bend over, will I still get a ticket?

25. No, offi, offic, lucifer...I'm not as think you are drunk I am. I swear to dog.

26. No, I don't know how fast I was going. The little needle stops at 110mph.

27. Back off Barney, I've got a piece.

28. But officer, I've got 2 different drivers licenses from 2 different states! Pick ONE!

29. I know I was weaving, but I was trying to hit all the little green men!

30. On the way to the station, let's get a six pack, oh and don't forget the cigs.

31. Come on, write the stupid ticket, the bars close in 20 minutes!

32. Hey, wasn't your daughter a porn queen?

33. How long is this going to take? Your wife is expecting me.

34. So that's what those yellow flashing lights in the school zone mean?

35. What do you use those rubber gloves for anyway?

And don't say "Yo Mamma" when asked for I.D.!
We are not human beings having a spiritual experience.
We are spiritual beings having a human experience.

I would have liked to be the proverbial "fly on the wall" during the incident. There have been many opinions voiced about it. But at this point we can only guess what happened. My personal opinion is a police authority type personality had a collision with a black rights type personality.

Keep talking that way, Shadylane, and I may decide I like what you write!

Seriously, after having read the police report I'm inclined to think Shadylane hit the nail on the head. Anyone who knows me knows that I am pro-law enforcement. But during a two-decades-long career, I've had more than a few incidents when I showed up on a crime scene of some type and ran into highly aggressive policemen, deputies, troopers, etc. in which a good "Yes, sir" or "No, sir" defused what could have become a real bad situation real fast.

I can either demand my rights as a reporter and end up with my editor bailing me out of jail and creating a big stink that the newspaper will win in court but lose in "bad blood" for years with the police, or I can defer to the officer on the scene and then have a polite but also pointed conversation with his sergeant or his captain or his chief later on. I've seen some of my friends in the media handcuffed and a few even arrested and booked for stuff that I consider to be needless provocations of junior officers. There's a time to fight, but the fight needs to be with the chief, the sheriff, or a zone captain over policy issues, not with a 22-year-old who hasn't yet learned the importance of caution and restraint in the face of provocations.

There was a verbal confrontation. After Sgt Crowley had made sure Mr. Gates was in his own home and wasn't a bugler. Mr Gates was arrested for disorderly conduct.

You mean he was playing piano or a guitar, not a bugle?

Smiles,
DTM

I for one stand with those who would be arrested and would stand up to the tyranny of police officers who go around arresting people simple for pissing off a cop.

Maybe the cop should have filed against Gates for a "hate crime" with his racial invectives?  I don't like bullies with badges, but I would never have gone after the cop, verbally or otherwise when he was trying to find out if my house was being burglarized.  Gates was flat out wrong and then added race to the issue.  BTW, there was NO profiling. Gates was completely within his rights and responsibilities to resist an illegal arrest.

This whole situation is really bizarre IMHO.  I probably would have shook it off, walked away, and chalked it up as another anti law enforcement encounter.  Sometimes you gotta have thick skin dealing with drunks, druggies, the mentally challenged, and those who just hate the world.  The only thing I won't tolerate is dummies wanting to put their hands on me, or ANYONE who makes an overt threat towards my family.  Other than that, I just let them vent............

The president is cheap plain and simple. When he extended the invite he should have said there will be a keg party.
