PRESS RELEASE

Pulaski County Prosecutor’s Office Awarded
Violence Against Women Act Grant Funds

Kevin Hillman, Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney, is pleased to announce that the Prosecutor’s Office has been awarded grant funds from the Violence Against Women Act for 2014 and 2015.  These grant funds will allow the Prosecutor’s Office to hire an additional  assistant prosecutor to focus on cases involving domestic violence.  In 2012, there were 171 cases involving domestic violence prosecuted by the Prosecutor’s Office, a 5% gain over 2011.  This increasing trend has been ongoing in Pulaski County for the past several years and has continued in 2013.

The new assistant prosecutor position will allow the Prosecutor’s Office to add focus to these very difficult and complex cases.  In many instances, these types of cases involve more issues than just a crime, they also involve a complex and broken family relationship.  The victims in these cases, both male and female, often have far different and complex needs compared to other crime victims.

The salary of the new prosecutor will be paid from the grant funds.  During the two year period of the grant, Pulaski County will receive over $85,000.00 in federal funds.  “This grant represents a tremendous benefit for our county and will allow us to focus on these difficult cases more closely and give these victims the time and attention they need,” said Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Hillman.  “I want to thank the members of my staff and the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MPRC) who worked on this grant application as well as the County Commission for allowing us to use some of the County’s MRPC allocated grant writing time.”
