Title: What was the FIRE Tuesday morning
Post by: Auctioneer Ed on August 11, 2009, 10:18:28 PM
To the northwest of the Main Gate of Ft Wood about 7:00 a.m. there was a HUGE fire. My truck that was parked at the gate is covered in ashes from it. Upom reporting it, was told it was a "controlled burn". Anyone have any further details?

Northwest of the main gate would be the former Fields property. Is that the area we're talking about? It makes a difference because I need to know which fire department to call.

DTM,

It looked like it could have been there on the back(west) end of the old Wood Village Trailer Park(Fields property). but the last time I was there, there were only 2 or 3 old trailers. The Apartments had burned long ago and have been shoved over.
Seems odd that if I have an old structure on my property & want to burn it, the Fire Dept & DNR won't let me.....but the City of St Robert can????

Doubt it. the terrorist training has been planned for quite some time, and I heard about St. Robert controlled burn on scanner this morning...but then again, who knows for sure around here anymore.

If I remember right, you live in the Waynesville Rural Fire Protection District close to but still outside the St. Robert city limits. This fire may have been within the St. Robert city limits. Different jurisdiction, different rules may apply. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, considering that St. Robert has more manpower and resources than Waynesville but covers a half-dozen square miles, compared to Waynesville which covers hundreds of square miles running all the way from Buckhorn to Devil's Elbow.

Also, there are legal differences between a city disposing of stuff in a controlled burn and a private individual doing the same thing.

But until I get more information I'm speculating. I'll call Chief Yurecko and Chief Fraley in the morning.

Given what Auctioneer Ed does for a living, it is not likely that this would be part of a Fort Leonard Wood anti-terrorist training event and he would not know about it. But on the other hand, joint operations with the civilians off-post have been known to happen. Again, I don't know but I will ask in the morning.

If it was in the old Fields property they were probably just burning off some of the brush down there to begin their building projects.  It is a overgown mess of trees and bushes back there.

They (whoever they are) are burning again this morning. A little further west than last week, but still a BIG fire.

The fire last week must have been huge.  My father said he could see flames from Sellers-Sexton

Brush and trees are ok to burn with a permit.  You can't burn buildings, etc no matter who you are or where you live without following the State regs. that are put out by DNR.  Think pollution.  Shame because there is so many old buildings that could be used for live fire training.   We did it all the time when I was a professional firefighter out in AZ.  But then again that was 30 yrs ago before all the growth, pollution concerns etc.
