Religion Opinion / Churches in town - new here
« on: August 12, 2007, 03:24:15 AM »
We're new in town and are looking for a church.  We have three kids ages 6, 5 & 2.  We are looking for a church that has Sunday School/Bible Study for the kids as well as adults.  Denomination is not extremely important (we're Catholic but have been attending Baptist church for 18 mos).  We're just looking for a great church family that has a wonderful spirit.  Any suggestions?  There seem to be a lot of churches around here but not many have websites so they're difficult to "check out."  I've looked at Harmony Baptist and Westside Baptist...also Faith Lutheran (but no website for it).  Any help is much appreciated! :)

Military Opinion / Re: Open vs. Closed Post

matrsnot - I completely agree.  Before my husband and I were married he lived on post at Fort Campbell.  Yes, getting a pass was a huge pain for me, but that's just the way things go and I didn't fuss about it.  Would I like for it to be a little easier for my relatives to get on post to see us?  Sure...but again, that's just the way things are.  When 9/11 happened we were stationed in Atlanta, GA at Fort McPherson.  With all of the confusion when the attacks first happened, not knowing if there were targeted cities or what was going on, I was not only concerned for myself & my son in the middle of Atlanta, I was terrified for my husband and everyone else at Fort Mac.  It's not a large post, but they have a lot of responsibility.  If it had been an open post I would have been horrified.

My feelings as far as FLW and similar posts go are torn.  They have a lot of graduations here and the schools on post are Waynesville School District so I imagine that would be quite a pain for civilians trying to get to one of the schools for a function (my kids are homeschooled so I'm not sure how that all works assumption on my part...if I'm wrong I apologize :) )  However, safety of all must be considered.  I imagine civilians having to get to the school probably wouldn't be happy about a closed post - but if there were an attempted attack/occurance/incident, they would probably thank their lucky stars it is such a pain. Well, I have to say that if I spend my whole life believing in God and find out in the end that he was not real, I will have lost nothing.  But if choose not to believe and in the end I find out he is real, I will have lost everything.

Amen! :)

Redneck - sounds like you've got a good head on your shoulders. I'm sorry you've had to see your grandpa that way.  It's a horrible thing to have to endure (my step-dad & step-grandfather were alcoholics). I'm glad you've made the decision not to be a part of all of that. Best of luck to you. :)

Great idea!  It's been so long since he's been to a school that has graduation I didn't even think about it.  I should probably be a good wife & go. ;)  I'll get his date & make my reservations.  I think he's planning to go talk to housing but you're right, he doesn't have the time right now.  Thanks for the reminder! :)

My husband is up there now - the rest of us are still in TN til June.  I am soooo ready to go!  I love it here, but I can't stand the waiting. :)  Still undecided on the on/off post thing.  The convenience of living on post would be great and we generally lean that way, but we'll probably check off post rentals just in case when the move gets closer. :)

Oh!  I'm so sorry!  I didn't mean to imply it was b/c of the DS!  It all comes down from command.  Thanks for bringing that up though - I certainly didn't mean for it to sound that way.

Yes, the debate on basic could go on forever; sounds like we're on the same page though.  I didn't know my husband yet when he went in, but I remember when my brother went in.  He said he just sat on his bag & hoped to not be noticed.

Good luck to your son!  When he gets done he should be sitting with his back straight, heels together (I think I remember that correctly - it's been almost 9 years since my brother went in & we met him at graduation) :D

Best of luck to you!

Thanks tanya0220!  He does know it - he's been studying for weeks. Then suddenly last night he wanted to make sure it was still required. :)  Funny what worry does to them sometimes.

Strictly Confidential - you are sooo funny!  My husband & brother feel the same way about basic training in general.  We've heard that it's not as "mean" as it was when they went through.  Thanks to tanya0220, you can rest easy knowing at least the DS candidates have to suffer as you did.  ;D

I pray you and your family are able to find some peace at this difficult time.  I believe everything happens for a reason - we may never know why, but God has a plan.

God Bless.

Do any of you know if DS candidates are still required to pitch modules?

She only goes to the schools for presentations, correct?  If that's the case, how much time does it take from regular police duty?  I think if people are responding to a DARE program, let her do it!  I was a student in DARE back in high school and can remember going to a school to talk to younger kids.  It was a wonderful experience that will stay with me forever.  I grew up in Kansas City, MO so I realize it's a much larger area, but that again this takes me back to the much time does it take away from her "job"?  If doing this is preventing drug/alcohol use in ANY way, wouldn't that in turn lessen the time needed on the streets???  Thanks for posting, Rick.

Nice post, fish.  I thought the hypocrisy in this was understood.  Thanks for breaking it down. :)

daisy1 - thanks for your post.  Going to a new place is always difficult.  I appreciate your feedback on the school district. :)

richland13 - I understand your position and thank you for the link.  I am glad the issue was resolved, no matter where I live, for the sake of the children.  I will check it out. :)

richland13 - If it's not inappropriate or confidential, can you elaborate on your side of the story?  What happened or what differs from Kathy's posting?  I have school age children & we'll be moving to the area soon so I'm just a concerned parent.

Thanks for your help.

Arby's really is out of control with their prices for what you get.  Even their drinks are higher than others.  I can't even remember the last time I've eaten there.

ghost_of_notsniw - Of course we're all  human.  I don't think fish implied Newt was right...just that he had asked God's forgiveness.  Isn't that all he can do after committing such an act?  I don't recall him ever declaring he was running, but at least he came clean and didn't make a huge scandal of it all...denying it all the way.

Wow,Taz...I had never thought of it like that (sadly!), but you're right.  Great if we could only get it to the higher

Matrsnot - yeah, Fred Thompson probably would. :D

This one just fires me up.  I know I'm new here, but this is one opinion I don't really care who disagrees.  My brother has done one tour in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq; my husband 1 in Kuwait, 2 in Iraq; my best friend was on the ship launching some of the first missles in the war, so I am close to this in a very personal sense.  There's an unfortunate trend with the command.  Basically, there's so much media over there with everyone saying "don't be too mean" that command doesn't want to lose their job/rank.  Seems like every thing they do is being watched with a magnifying glass and many seem to forget this is a war.  This is not a  peacekeeping mission yet; it is war.  I am NOT all about killing innocent people and bombing just to bomb or anything of the sort.  However, if they want to shoot at my brother, my husband or my best friend or any of their fellow military serving this country and keeping the war off US soil, they need to return fire without having to worry about a bunch of repercussions b/c they weren't being nice.

That is awesome!  Thank you so much for sharing! My husband flew into Atlanta for R&R last year and, while the crowd wasn't that large, the feeling was there.  Those people are doing a great thing. :)

Crazy Horse - I know now you feel.  I am pretty conservative but I like Obama; don't know why...just do.  I probably won't vote for him.  Between gun control and abortion I generally vote Republican.  Those are issues I am not able to ignore (abortion for me, gun control for my husband) :)

Hopefully there will be some more candidates later in the race. This is so early to have the whole presidential battle happening I think the general public will be sick of what we have now by summer.  At least it will give opportunity for others to run...there's still plenty of time!
