City Government Opinion / Re: Waynesville Nuisance Abatement Board
« on: April 06, 2007, 01:38:40 PM »
Dawn - I agree with what your saying, and I think to some extent everyone here does.  From what Luge and Biker described, the abatement board's purpose is supposed to be health and welfare of the community - so if someone's FRONT yard which is open for everyone to see is not only messy, but messy to the extent of posing a danger to the health and welfare of the community, then the abatement board will act according to the ordinance.

The article in the Daily Guide has left a bad taste in our mouths as to the way that the abatement board is choosing to handle complaints.  I don't know if the whole 'scare tactic' article was the idea of the abatement board or the Daily Guide, but it backfired.  Yes, the community is now aware of the existence of the board, and although it's function was meant to serve a good purpose, we all feel extremely negative about it.

Luge & Biker - Thank you so much for your informative posts on this discussion.  I guess I am still at my original opinion on this -
"Abatement = good
Plastering negative campaign against some guy because of who he is = bad"
Hopefully someone from the WNAB will learn from the controversy caused by this last incident and work out the kinks where this ordinance can be used as it was meant to be used: As a means of protecting the health and welfare of the community and to promote growth - not to wield it around like you have the Power of Greyskull.

I'll comment on the law enforcement tax.  Would you look at that???? 59%!!!!  Good for Richland.  At least we know one part of Pulaski County supports a law enforcement tax.

I live closer to Wal-Mart, but have decided that I will drive to Waynesville to shop at Price Cutters.  Yes, I will waste the gas, and spend a little more on some items because I literally cannot stand to go to Wal-Mart.  I hate the crowds, the parking lot, the complete chaos that is shopping at Wal-Mart.  I don't know why, but I actually feel physically ill at the prospect of having to return there for any reason.  Everytime I have gone to Price Cutters, it has been wonderful!  Why?  Everyone else is at Wal-Mart!!!  I'm not a horrible unsociable person.  It's just the whole Wal-Mart experience leaves me frazzled and stressed out.  I guess I'm getting too old. LOL

I have a question for this self righteous board. How can they see debris in someones back yard? I didn't think anyone could go in your back yard. Isn't that trespassing? After that article who would want to fight them they just try to ruin your name in the community. I know someone who had two cars that didn't have a license on them they were told to put them in the drive way and they did that. Then they got a notice from the board saying they weren't allowed to have them unless they had a garage to put them in. They are fixing these cars up for there children. So I guess if you don't make enough money to have a garage or to buy your children cars that are new and don't need worked on they don't want you in the city limits. I also know someone that had some stuff in their back yard that you can't see any other way but to go into their yard and they got a notice. As far as I am concerned the people on this board have somekind of problem that they need to insult other people an point out their faults in order to hide their own. Here is my advice see a doctor and get some help don't use other people to get over your own personal problems.

Wow.  That is all really bad.  There has to be some kind line drawn.  What you're describing sounds like a gestapo coming in, passing judgment on you, and then advertising it.  You know I hadn't heard of them going into backyards and what not.  And Taz and Biker have nearly swayed me over into changing my position as far as the abatement being good.  So does this board have no guidelines as to what is 'unsitely' and a 'nuisance'?

The Federal Government is light years ahead on this topic; read the order/direction/regulation regarding smoking in a FEDERAL building.  It DOES NOT say there is absolutely no smoking, but rather "Designated smoking areas must have positive air flow", (exact words escape me, but that's pretty darn close).  It really wouldn't take much to install "positive airflow system" in the dispatchers office near the new door.  That would allow the dispatcher / jailer to smoke inside a designated smoking room while still be able to function in their duties.  If the ventilation system is routed properly no one will ever know they are smoking in there...

At last!!!  Someone answered my question!!!  And I notice that you did indicate FEDERAL building, which the Pulaski COUNTY courthouse is not.  Thank you so much for this information.
Awesome idea!!!  Sounds like the smoking areas in an airport.  That sounds like an excellent solution.  It is also fair to both smokers and non-smokers.  You are a genious!! I wonder what the costs of such a project would be?

I have no doubt he has given them a hard time about it.  I have had dealings with the man myself.  I read somewhere (maybe the comments on the DG article) that some other area has an abatement board, and if their notices are ignored two times, they clean it up themselves and fine the property owner whatever fines they have plus the clean up costs.  That seemed like a good idea.
Thanks for getting my point!!!

Does this Abatement Board deal with businesses as well as personal property?

I agree - there are several areas that need some major clean up in the St. Robert area.  That's why I was asking.

Also, I was curious about how people felt about the way they are going about the process.  I am all for an abatement board, but I'm not so sure how necessary it was to go through shaming some one all over the paper for it.  It seems the citizen of the year was an easy target.  "That's right - if we'll go after the Citizen of the Year, EVERYONE is fair game!!!" I get the whole clean up campaign, I just think that had this person not been citizen of the year, we wouldn't have seen such a huge cover story in the paper about it. They are using him as an example.  It just seemed a little overkill to me.

Sneak Peek Sheriff's View / Re: Law Enforcement Tax Poll

I would definitely support a Law Enforcement Tax.  What I don't understand is why the Commissioners would not put it on a ballot and just let the citizens decide.  Does anyone know?

I am not new to this board, but I am new as far as actively posting on it, so you all will notice that I will ask a lot of questions. Thank you in advance for tolerating them, and even sometimes answering them!!! hee hee hee

Is it actually a Missouri State Law to not smoke in a County Courthouse?  The 'No smoking in a government building" - is that even a law, or just a general rule? If it is a law, is it a Federal Law and therefore is enforcable in Federal government buildings only, which the Pulaski County Courthouse is not?

I am not trying to be cynical.  I honestly don't know and am curious.  If anyone knows the answers to these compelling questions, I would love to hear them!!!  Thanks.

Sports Opinion / Re: Soccer reshuffle creates concerns
« on: March 26, 2007, 09:30:56 PM »
My son decided against playing soccer this year.  For the the last 3 years, he has wanted to play on a team with his best friend.  His best friend's dad is the coach of that team. There team is as average as my son's prior teams the least few years.  There was no reason for wanting to be on this other team, other than to play soccer with his best friend.  Since some others have ruined it for everyone else, we were not permitted to request a specific coach.  He got tired of waiting for it to happen and has opted to spend time with me at the gym a few times a week instead.  Maybe that sounds bad to some of you, but I guess the point is, my son wasn't in it to win it.  He was in it to have fun, share the experience with his friends, and learn and become a better player. He loves soccer, but I guess he's a little tired of the let down every season.

I can't believe that we have to actually consider setting up rosters for child soccer teams. I guess I'm completely lame because I just didn't think the emphasis should be winning.  I guess I don't get it at all because I thought the emphasis was on teaching our kids a skill, pulling them away from video games and showing them that OUTSIDE is fun, too, and holding their interest in a positive activity that will help keep them out of trouble.  Sorry if I offended anyone by my thoughts on this.  That was not my intention.  I just wish I could better understand other points of view on this issue.

If it was LT Green, she is Deputy Sheriff on the first floor in the Sheriff's Department.

I don't believe any of the offices in the PCSD have actual windows.  The only way for outside to get in is through the outside door into the dispatch area and the outside door into the Sheriff's Dept.  When I worked in the courthouse, the Sheriff's Dept was the only indoor area where you could smoke.  LT Green had a little smoke eater in her office at that time.  Anyway, anyone who smoked in the building just went to the Sheriff's Department to do it rather than stand outside in the cold.  Things have improved greatly for the non-smoker who works in that building.  I guess it wasn't enough to appease LT Green though. As far as we know, she may be very allergic to cigarette smoke, so I can see her frustration.  However, I agree that it is the kind of thing that could have been better handled internally instead of making what appears to be another negative mark on J.B.'s tenure.

Military Opinion / Civilians thankful to soldiers
« on: March 23, 2007, 06:51:52 PM »
I witnessed the most heartwarming thing today.  I am a civilian DOD employee.  I went out to lunch today with some people that I work with - about 8 of us, all military except for 3.  When we were almost finished with our meal, the waitress comes up to us and tells us that someone has paid for our meal.  We don't know who that someone was because he and his wife insisted that she not inform us that the meal had been covered until they had left.  Anyway, they did leave a note to explain.  It was a note of appreciation, thanking them for all they do and all that they are prepared to do - "God Bless you and God Bless America"

I wanted to cry.  What a wonderful gesture!  I just thought you all would really appreciate that.  I know I did and am really glad that I was there to witness it.

Thanks to all our military and to all our civilians who understand and take the time to show their appreciation.  You guys rock!!

I agree with Coyote.  I belive the subject line had a question mark after it - not a period or exclamation point.  I think Smokey, was merely trying to ascertain if the rumor that was heard was true or not.  And the DG article would reasonably lead someone to the assumption that the rumor may be true.  I know that was my first impression in reading the article, which I did prior to Smokey posting it.

I hope Winston is okay.  I missed seeing him wandering the halls at the Ed Center this week.  He has been a part of that building for so many years that it seems empty without him in it.  The family is in our prayers.

Last I heard his mother had taken ill, business was slow, and he was on the verge of a divorce.  So he shut down the place.  I have only seen him twice since then.  The last time was about 2 weeks ago at Billy'z Backroad Honky Tonk (The old Z's Place) in Doolittle.  Didn't get an opportunity to talk to him to see what he's up to though.

Wow - The Dugout.  I worked there the last couple of years they were open.  Good times.  I really miss that place.  I get all melancholy every time I go to El Jimadors for lunch.  I miss all the people I worked with and many of the customers a lot.  They were all really good people. (((**&^^%
