Grant Award from MODOT
Pulaski County Sheriff J. B. King
Aug. 25, 2010

The Pulaski County Sheriff Office has been awarded a grant by District Nine of the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) in Willow Springs, Missouri. The grant will be for a total of $2,300 and will assist the sheriff’s office in the purchase of a new Stalker dual head radar unit for a patrol car. The radar unit will be completely paid for by the grant.

The grant was made possible by District Nine as part of their effort to promote traffic safety on Missouri roads and prevent fatal accidents. Over the past ten year period Pulaski County has suffered approximately 95 lives lost in traffic crashes. Many of those crashes were the direct result of traffic violations such as excessive speed or driving on the wrong side of the road.

The safety division of MODOT District Nine supports traffic safety efforts through out the district which includes Pulaski County.

Quote by Sheriff King: “Traffic safety is not a topic many people get excited about. In fact there are people here in Pulaski County who are opposed to the idea of a deputy sheriff using a radar unit to a write a ticket. But the reality is that the deputies are sworn to enforce all Missouri laws. While we do spend the vast majority of our time on criminal law enforcement we do encourage our deputies to take enforcement action on traffic violations that they observe if they are not on another call.

The exception to that rule are the hours that the deputies spend on their day’s off or vacation time when they work the MODOT paid overtime safety grants. On those days their job is pure traffic enforcement. We will call them off the traffic grant to assist in a major criminal case if necessary but that would only be on an emergency basis.

Over the past ten year period there have been almost 95 people killed here in Pulaski County due to traffic crashes. Every day we receive citizen requests at the sheriff’s office to provide traffic control, especially speed control, in those areas of the county that we have the jurisdiction over.  We take those requests seriously because we know that more people will be killed on Pulaski County roads in the future and we want to cut those fatality numbers down.”
