Title: The Hub
Post by: littlebit on March 09, 2007, 12:07:10 AM
Excellent food! We have eaten here regularly since the early 90's. They never disappoint.
Our favorite dinner is the St. Moritz Schnitzel with a side of jager gravy (brown gravy with mushrooms).
Just pour it on top of the schnitzel. Pure heaven.

I love this place.  I love the snitzel that has the cheeses inside it...I could hurt myself on that stuff.  There fried potatoes are very very good too.  I love their salads and so does my mom.  My son and daughter in law use to eat there all the time also...It is very good and I love their deserts...yummy...

This is just one of those places that I NEVER have a complaint about. I can't say I have an actual favorite dish because I love it all!

Maybe we are the only ones w/a complaint...we didnt think it was worth the money.  The meat had some really fatty parts and the cheese wasnt melted on top it was gross as it wasnt really HOT when it was served (except the soup that didnt cool till after food came even w/an ice cube)!  Over all the taste was okay.  We got deserts to go and ate when we got home and it tasted like it was freezer burnt (cheesecake).

You must have hit them on a real bad day. I have never had a complaint. Even my dessert is always wonderful. How odd!

Been to the Hub twice, first time i told myself i wouldn't ever go back. Went back the second time because the wife begged me to take her there( so i did). Will not go back for a third time.  First time I ordered the jager schnitzel, the second time the saurbraten. Was disappointed with the food both times,  schnitzel was mainly all fat, and saurbraten was bland.  The spatzel tasted like water, no flavor to it what so ever.  Maybe i just happen to get lucky to go on nights that they were having a bad day.

I consider it in at least the top two eating Establishments in town.

Last time, the prime rib was cold and the club soda was flat.  We used to go all the time, then it seemed like every time we went, it was bad...including the service.  Not spending money there again.

I'm not an employee and I am honest in saying when the mother was there, the service and food was great.  Since she retired (so I've heard), something bad happened; at least when I've been there.  Maybe I shouldn't let a couple of bad experiences sway me, but when you are paying frickin' $75.00 for two people, around here, you expect the best.

I wouldn't put in the top two.  But i base my opinion on the bases of what I got when living in Germany and the 10 yrs I spent working in restaurants. And to get bad food twice is not a coincidence, even when it is years apart, I dont think I just happen to pick the two bad nights that they have had.

EVERYONE I know loves this place and they all rant and rave and go there when they want a nice dinner out. I have been there 2 or 3 times. I have to say they are "ok", but I am very picky. I spent 4 years in Germany and really miss the food from there, so maybe I am just spoiled. Hubby loves it though too. We went on Valentines night one year, it was SOOOOO crowded, but everything went decently timed.. wasnt a terrible wait for a table, food came out fairly quickly. Dinner can get very pricey though. We have 3 kids and have all went together and got dinners and escargot (which I wont touch, but again my kids ages 7-14 at the time LOVED) so I guess I would recommend the escargot there.

The schnitzel is traditionaly made of veal, but the hub serves only pork schnitzel.
The Hub serves other dishes as well. My mother in law seemed to enjoy the roladen last time we visited.

Not everything is Pork, they have Knackwurst, and the Rouladen,    and the stuff on the American menu. I use to work there, and if they are not to busy they will pound out a chicken breast and make a schnitzel out of that..but  don't know how well that tastes...I've just served it before! They definitely have the best seafood platter around this area though w/lobster and crablegs!

We ate here yesterday evening. The food was yummy as always, but we had a "new" waitress who had no clue what she was doing. Poor girl, last night was her first time waitressing, maybe she will improve with time.

We also ate there yesterday evening and we must have had the same waitress.  We got there around 7:30 on a Friday night.....so crowded.  We have eaten there at least 10 times before and never had a problem with the food or service.  Well, last night was different....we only waited about 5 min for a table.  Then our waitress (who I had never seen before) came and waited on us.  She took our drink orders and food orders.  She brought our drinks and salads promptly.  She brought us a pitcher for our sweet tea (that 3 of us had).  Then, we waited for about an hour and fifteen minutes before our food came and NO sign of our waitress the whole time.  Finally, I took our two boys (age 2 and 5) to the dessert case to try and keep them occupied (very very restless and hungry) where I finally saw our waitress that said our food was coming up.  About 10 minutes later, our food was served.  My husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law's food (shnitzels) were cold and she didn't even fill up the rest of the drinks that weren't having tea.  We did not see her again until we were done and that's when she picked up our plates.  Then, we had to hunt her down again to get our check to leave.  I love The Hub and strongly recommend it......just hope that you don't get our waitress.

I have eaten at the Hub several times, a couple of those times has been work related with a large group. In my experience the service has always been very pleasent, friendly, and fast. I also love the atmosphere there. I have tried several things on the menu. I thought it was delicious and it is always more than I could eat. I ordered desserts a couple of times and the cakes I tried were heavenly. I will be going back very soon.

We ate there this past week for the first time. We all had the seafood platter - wow - talk about a lot of food! Three of us could have eaten on one platter, but we had lots for the next day. It was my birthday so I got the cheesecake too. The price was too much for my pocketbook, but it was a birthday gift so I didn't have to worry about that. We also had the escargot - it was covered in garlic, butter and mushrooms so I have no idea what it really tasted like. We just ordered it so we could say we have eaten it. Over all, great food and service (we ate in the bar, there was a private party on the other side).

The hard "rolls" are brochen, german bread, suppose to be hard on the outside, soft on the inside.  Many of us eat brochen with butter, as a "nosh"-snack.  Like many italian breads/rolls, that is how it's suppose to be.  Had I gone there and the brochen was "soft" on the outside, I would have complained!

I'm surprised to hear the salad was not up to par.....  All you would have had to do was tell your waiter/waitress and they would have taken it back, actually shouldn't have served it.  The final inspection of the food, is a matter for the server.

The last time I ate there I was order schnitzel and I was brought a piece of meat that was almost burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. They did take the meat back and brought me the same piece of meat back. It was HORRIBLE!!!!!  I will never eat there and again and I would not recommend eating there to anyone.

The hub is one of the best places in town to eat. I have eaten there plenty of times in the ten years I have lived here, and I have never once had a bad experience with their food. The only complaints that are reasonable to me are the ones that people make about the food not being as good as authentic German food, and those aren't even that reasonable when you consider where we live.

P.S. If you say the food wasn't good at the Hub, then I say you are a liar. Good day, sir. I SAID, "GOOD DAY!!!"

This conversation reminds me of the time someone I know went to an Italian restaurant and was unhappy that almost everything on the menu was pasta. (True story, BTW -- I broke out laughing until I realized they were serious.)

It's been a few years since I've eaten at the Hub since for me, upscale restaurants are "special occasion" things I do for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Things could have changed, and I do know a number of German military wives who don't like the Hub because they don't think it's authentic enough, but they believe it's the best German restaurant in the area. I do think the objections voiced here, especially about the rolls, may have more to do with people not liking German cooking styles than not liking the Hub.

Trust me Darrell I know about German rolls lived in Germany twice.  I have only been in this area for 7 years and raw on the inside and practally burnt on the outside, is pretty sick. I will say this was several years ago but enough for me not to go back.  I worry about getting sick because of food not prepared correctly.

One last thought, I would hardly call the Hub "upscale".
Title: Re: The Hub

Fair point... if you've lived and eaten in Germany then you have an educated opinion; we simply disagree, or perhaps I was luckier in my visits to the Hub. I can say that I didn't have your bad experience and if I had been served undercooked food, I would have a similar opinion.

By "upscale" I mean around here something higher than Ryans or our other typical chain restaurants. Other than The Pointe, I'm not aware of any restaurants in this immediate area which serve the sort of food I would have called "upscale" in other communities where I lived, and The Pointe markets their food and their window view rather than their internal decor and other amenities -- there simply isn't enough of a market around here to support a high-end restaurant like what I would have considered "upscale" in places like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, or even in smaller cities like my hometown of Grand Rapids.

The Hub is still a wonderful place to eat. I have dined there for over 20 years and it's great. For those that have not gone in a few years you should go back. I remember about 3-4 years ago the food wasn't up to The Hub's standards during a few visits the schnitzel was burnt and the geman potato salad tasted scorched but it didn't take long for the kitchen to be back on track and up to their standards they have always set. I highly recommend the Hub to all that ask.
