The Sheriff’s View #45, Week of Nov. 5 to 9, 2007
Welcome aboard one more time. In last week’s column there was a lot of gloom and doom news that in some way was going to have an impact on the department. And I must report that I took some criticism for writing so much bad news. The people wanted a more positive slant toward the department news. And I will confess, I would rather write positive news about the department. BUT, in my very first column I told you that I was going to write about the news that had an impact on the department. I promised you the good, the bad, and the ugly news as it developed. I believe that I have kept my promise. So the bottom line is that the news will be the news, whatever may develop.
The calls for service/case number count stands at 7,714 this morning the 3rd of November. Last week it was 7,544 so we gained 170 calls for service if I did the math correctly. I also did a little math directed toward predicting the future just now and it would be possible that we might even break 9,000 calls for the year. I do not think that will happen but we may get real close to the nine mark. I am positive we will shatter the 8,000 mark plus several hundred more.
I have been working on a special report concerning the jail and I feel the need to inform you that from 1-1-2001 to 7-31-2007 the total jail expense for inmate board, food, and medical reached $3,454,629.00. This does not include the cost of car expense on the inmate transfers or the salary of the jail staff. But it does make a nice impressive figure. I might add that the inmate board paid to other Counties was $2,029,712.00. I have few doubts that this two million plus helped enrich the other counties and helped pay for their jails. It also helps me understand why the Sheriff’s of the other two counties smile so much when they see me.
Since we are on the jail topic I should also report the jail plumbing repairs seem to be headed in the right direction. I understand that the County Clerk has requested a bid to replace all of the lead based valves in the jail with modern valves. So this counts as good news for the day.
In other good news the Grace Covenant Christian Church once again held their Hallelujah Harvest night on Oct. 31st and all proceeds were to be donated to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department. I cannot tell you how much this means to the employees of the Sheriff’s Department. We all feel that we get the short end of the stick and to suddenly have a group of citizens jump up and work hard to enable us to buy more equipment to help us when we work is just a feeling of pure joy.
Last year they gave us a check for $3,000.00 and I hope they can equal that this year. Our intention is to purchase new laptops for the working road officers only. There are a number of reasons for this and they all relate to the work efficiency and time of the officers. Since we use a computer based reporting system the deputy must take his/her notes at the scene of the incident and then return to the office to write the report. This adds time to the report process. If we could have the Deputy start his report while still on the scene that means saved time and it also means all of the blanks should be filled in before they leave the scene. This will also promote working on reports at other times. One real example would be the twelve-hour guard shift at the hospital for a sick inmate. The last time I did a guard shift like that at the Lake Ozark Hospital I did a special report in longhand and still had hours to kill. The bottom line is that when you have half the road Deputies that you need anything you can do to make them more productive or faster to complete a job will pay off in the end.
On Friday night I joined a number of my Deputies as we assisted with the Waynesville Tigers Vs. Camdenton Lakers football game. We had been told that there would be 5,000 fans in attendance and that there would be problems between rabid fans on both sides. We were also advised of a rumor that the Rolla and Lebanon fans were also going to show up and create problems. Nope, nothing much happened it was a quiet night. Well considering how much traffic we had and the high number of fans that did show it was a quiet night. We had 17 officers on hand for the game and the Waynesville City Police Department ranking officer in charge of the event, Reserve Cpl. John Newcomer, did a great job of directing the event. My only gripe of the night was that I missed every good play on the field except the touchdown throw by Camdenton into the end zone. And that play did not thrill me.
I seem to have reached the end of mostly good news filled column so maybe I will be safe this week. I would like to remind everyone that the cold weather has started the deer moving around and like a said a column or so back it is now time for their annual road rage madness so beware of the deer. Please drive safe and stay legal we do have room in the jail and the jail lights are on.

Spoke to Kathy just now, she says no they are not closing down.

Ok im going to say this with hope that no one will attempt to hit me ;)
Heard a rumor from a very very reliable source ..
After the first of the year Rockin R is going to close down ?
Please correct me if i am wrong, but if this is true there is oppurtunity for another night club...

Spoke to Stephan, he had changed the special two days ago and didn't realise the old special was on his menu page. I had only changed it on the main page of this site, and not on his menu page as we were in the process of updating his menu page. It is being changed now.

No, thank you though.  I don't want a refund. We enjoyed the pizza...the best thing would be to let all his cashiers know, or post a dated coupon or number or something on-line to take in with you.  I really don't know how that works.  I can see he'd have to be careful or no one would be paying full price ever.  And to him it wouldn't be a matter of just six bucks.

I will get you a refund. He can't help his employees make mistakes.
Just a little perturbed that on this site they advertise a 3-topping internet special for $10.30 (no coupon that I could see) and then no one working there seemed to know anything about it and we had to pay $16.30.  Pizza was really good...we like it, but don't offer a special and then act like we don't know what we are talking about.  Six bucks is six bucks.

The Sheriff’s View #44, Week of Oct. 29 to Nov. 2, 2007

Welcome aboard for another session of thrills, chills and maybe some humor. Maybe even some good news. As you may recall last weeks column was long and full of news. But it seems that I left something out of the column. I was supposed to mention that our Detective was having a problem finding good solid boxes to ship some unusual evidence or at least unusual size evidence to the lab. I am not sure just how this event occurred but as Mr. Clint Eastwood said in that one movie, “Improvise, overcome, adapt.” Well the Detective did just that and it turned out that full size unused pizza boxes from TK’s Pizza did the trick. I would like to thank TK’s Pizza for their donation of new boxes to help us fight crime. But I should mention that most of my Troops prefer to have their TK’s Pizza boxes full of the product that just came out of the oven.

The case number/calls for service count now stands at 7,544 for the year. We gained 179 calls for service over the past week. The 7,544 represents our new record high for the department. And that number will be good until I announce the new record high next week. And the week after that and the week after that until we reach 12-31-07.

In other news I once again get to announce the loss of another veteran employee from our jail staff. Mr. John Redd has accepted a position with a much higher paying state agency and he will depart from our ranks on 10-31-07. At this time John is the longest tenured employee of the jail and he has lots of comp time on the books. And so once again I get to write that nasty little cluster of words that you have read so many times now. How are we to prosper as a department if we continue to lose our veteran officers and employees? I am thinking of changing the department shoulder patch to read the “Pulaski County Sheriff’s Training Academy for Future Employment”.

Since John is leaving I also get to announce that ……… yes, surprise, we are looking for a new full time jail staff member and one part time person in the jail. We would love to have a person apply with prior experience. We would also like to have someone with a good solid work background. In any case please apply at the Sheriff’s Department front office. The annual salary is $20,313.00 for the full time position and $8.55 per hour for the part time. We will do a background check and make other checks to verify the applicant’s information. I can promise you that a job in our jail will not be dull and boring. You will stay busy.

In other good news there were comments in the paper recently and rumors around the courthouse that we had three jail cells down due to plumbing problems and that this was costing us a fortune in inmate board bills. The news was not exactly correct. We had one cell down and two in trouble. The two in trouble continued to be used. The one cell has been down for a long time due to the lack of replacement parts. As I have reported in the column before our jail-plumbing specialist has located the needed parts. The nasty part is that each valve will cost $1,650.00 and we need three of them. Or at least that is what I was told by another elected official. I have not caught up with the plumber yet to verify the cost. Considering the difficulty he had in just locating the obsolete parts I suspect the rumor is true. I sure do hope he can get the parts in soon and fix the leaks. It would be nice to cut down a few more inmate trips to other jails.

In other bad news I received a message this past week that the Federal funding for the MOSMART anti-drug or I should say anti-methamphetamine program has been cut out of next years federal budget. Can you spell the word disaster? This is going to have a very adverse affect on the LANEG drug task force when it comes to funding our task force officer’s paychecks. We may have to lay off some officers. I know the MOSMART funding has been critical for some time to the anti-drug war. Here in Pulaski County our MOSMART funded anti-drug officers positions ended the day before I took office so I have not had a chance to work with the funds in Pulaski County. My only reference has been as a member of the board of directors of the Lake Area Narcotic Enforcement Group. The cut in funding for LANEG will hurt us bad. I am not sure I want to attend the next board meeting. I get my fill of financial gloom and doom here in Pulaski County.

And so once again I have reached the end of another column. I hope you enjoyed the news both bad and bad. Or was there any good news? I would ask you to drive safe and stay legal. We are fast running out of the money needed to house you in the jail but if you must visit we will find a way to accommodate you. The jail lights are on!

Remember when Guaranteed Satisfaction was a motto of theirs? The bad guys ruined it for all of us.
We bought my little guy a children's CD, got it home and it did not work at all.  So we took it back and I was told due to the copyright laws since the CD was open it couldn't be exchanged or refunded.  I argued with them that the CD did NOT play, that they should get a CD player and try it themselves.  They refused.  I asked how was I supposed to know if it worked without opening the package.  Just told me basically see we have a CD that is no good.

Bought a VCR DVD player at Walmart maybe 4 months ago, it quit working. Mylisa took it back yesterday and they said it is over 3 months old and said pretty much see you later. Since when do these electronic companies only stand behind their producs for 3 months, or is it just Walmart?

Personally I am never nervous or offended when the cops are behind me, because I know my rights.
I do, however, not like to be pulled over for some BS reason, that has happened several times. I am also more than willing to give them my opinion of the BS. LOL...  I think it's called Ahole Syndrome.

Thanks for donating to the cause today.
Let's not be too hard on someone that may be skeptical.  We all know that there are plenty of scams & panhandlers out there in the world today, just trying to make an easy buck from mine & your hard earned pay.  We just need to explain that there is a REAL need and some friends & neighbors are try to help out.

Tigers 44  Washington 7
Waynesville is tied for 4th in the Class 5 State Poll. Their only loss is to Farmington who is ranked 3rd. Waynesville beat Rolla last week by a score of 35-13. Looks like Camdenton put a little better shellacking to Rolla.
Camdenton 42 Rolla 0
Spoke to a Camdenton Coach today, he was saying they were hoping to get by Rolla, looks like they did. I had said Rolla would be a cake walk.
I did tell him expect a loss to Waynesville, he giggled... He mentioned how he was impressed by Tailback L.J. Fort from Waynesville, and we also talked about Lyle Cox.

Another Piranha was caught at the Lake Of The Ozarks at the 5 mile marker. They say that the Piranha are tropical fish and shouldn't survive the winters here. They believe people are just releasing them into the lake from their private collections.

It is legit and so far 350.00 has been donated.

I got a call earlier from some woman I have no clue who she was but wanted to know why anyone should donate to this because I had no picture of her posted on here. That she felt like we possibly could be doing this as a scam....Well it is not a scam!!!!!!!!!!!! This is real. I will not beg for anyones help, It is up to the people if they want to help my family out or not. I do not feel like asking for help to get my sister back home and into a home for her to get around is begging. I have no problem with anyone calling me at home to ask questions about how she is doing but don't call me at home if you just want to call to put me down for wanting things better for her.
If anyone has a doubt on who she is and if she is real , She may want to kill me for this but here is a picture of her. May not be the best picture in the world but the only one I have of her on my pc right now. She hates for anyone to see her pictures and have her pictures taken.

Well I sure as hell wasn't gonna vote for Timmy Berrier. Ransdall was the only choice.

Most people don't want to do anything that will take a personal effort.  We should just come to the realization that unless we get rid of the two Commissioners that do not support the LE sales tax it will never get on the ballot.  Thornsberry's term expires in 2008 and Ransdall's in 2010.  Those that helped to elect Ransdall are getting exactly what they asked for, a professional politician (Good ol Boy).  If you voted for him, please don't know complain that he doesn't support the LE sales tax, because he told you before you voted for him that he didn't support it!!

Need someone to go to the house with construction expierience, and see what the construction needs are.
Please let us all know exactly what is needed.  Heck if they can do it on TV when everybody is watching, then why can't we do it cause it needs doing.  Time for actions to back up my mouth.

In regards to materials, rock, etc let me know, and when there's actual building going on. Please let us know.  Who knows, we might all knock this out in a couple of days?

Best to all
