I went to the Courthouse today to cast my vote.  I remember the very first time I voted, and the excitement felt when I entered the voting booth.  Yes, I was excited, thrilled would be more appropriate of a word.  I can honestly say, today I felt that same thrill.  Yes, we vote but, many of us, over the years have lost the "thrill" of what it is we are actually doing.  We are VOTING, how exciting is that?  We are deciding on who we want to be the Commander and Chief of this wonderful Country!!!
My wish for all of you is that each one of you, regardless of how your cast your vote, experience the thrill that I just did casting my vote......

How do you qualify to vote early?  Was your wait long?  Can anybody do it?

I was hoping that they would break the alphabet into more groups this year to get the line down faster at the SR Community Center.  in 2004 I waited outside in the cold for over an hour.  Hopefully, they will fix that this year.
When I was young, I wanted to be older.  This is not what I expected!

It is a great feeling isn't it.

Not that it is that great, but I did want to share with you, Kari and others a letter that was read for me by my Treasurer, Sue Rapone, during a recent Meet the Candidate Forum that I could not attend because of a prior committment.  I kinda goes with what you are saying and is my true feeling about politics and voting.

Dave

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

I apologize for not being with you tonight for what is always a great event.  Tonight I am near the Branson area for a dinner at which I am the speaker, a dinner and ceremony honoring our nation’s heroes, our veterans.  This has been on my calendar for many months and is something that I just felt that I could not cancel, I hope you can understand.

The past four years that you have allowed me to represent you in Jefferson City have been the greatest honor I have ever known.  Having the opportunity to carry the rural Missouri values that we all share to our state’s capitol and fighting to make a difference in our state is a responsibility that I take very seriously and one that I am humbled to be entrusted with.  For the trust you have put in me, I cannot thank you enough.

I would normally spend time in this letter telling you about what I feel are great accomplishments in the past four years in our state government, there have been many.  However, I am not going to do that, instead I want to share with you a very simple and short message.

We all know that this year is a historical year in our nation, no matter who wins the race for President.  We also know we are going to have a new Governor in Missouri and will be facing changes in our states direction, again no matter who is elected.  Of course I have my preferences and I am betting you can guess what those are, but my message to you is not who to vote for, but to simply VOTE!  We are a nation that settles our differences not with bullets but with ballots, that is what sets us apart from much of the world.  Many say it is their right to vote, and it is…but more importantly it is your duty as American citizens to vote.  It is the most important thing we do as citizens of a representative government.

While today there is a great deal of emphasis on Republicans and Democrats, on November 5th most of the political rhetoric will fade away and we will be reminded that, by the Grace of God, we are all Americans.  While there will always be disagreement among us, we also must work together and continue to make our communities, state, and nation the greatest it can be.  I have every confidence that will happen.  That confidence comes from knowing people like you, the backbone of our state and nation, the very kind of people that make this the greatest nation on earth.  Please…vote on November 4th!

Thank you for your time and all that you do for our communities.  God Bless the Great State of Missouri and God Bless the United States of America.

Sincerely,

David Day

I had no wait what-so-ever.  Here are the requirements for early voting:
  • Will be absent from your voting jurisdiction on election day
  • Are incapacitated or confined due to illness or physical disability, or caring for an incapacitated person
  • Are restricted by religious belief or practice
  • Are employed by an election authority
  • Are incarcerated, but have retained all your voting qualifications

Farnham voted early, which one of those did he qualify for?? It doesn't say I am better than you on any line.. I doubt he is out of town on election day either. SO that leaves.

Perhaps he's afraid he will qualify for the last one by election day?

Here is a quote from Farnham himself.

"Some of us political junkies have already voted by absentee and are just waiting for the election outcome.
When the phone rings and the voice on the other end starts the why I should vote for their candidate I put a stop to them real quick by announcing that I have voted already.
Wish I would have thought of this years ago, sure does cut down the phone time from the phone banks."

"Will be absent from your precinct on voting day" is probably what Mr Farnham checked.  Lots of candidates whose name appears on the ballot vote absentee, due to the fact they will probably be campaigning at another polling place. If they do happen to make it by their particular polling place on Election Day, they don't have to go inside or within the 30 feet of the polling place so one cannot construe that a candidate was violating the "no electioneering within 30 feet of a polling place" law.

It's really one of those "darned if you do or darned if you don't" situations.

Good point, but no one expects him to not vote in his own precinct.. I think saying you will be in Dixon shouldn't qualify.. I am not special so I will vote on election day..

I would be willing to bet almost every candidate of both parties had already voted, because of the reasons Ed just said.  I have voted already but I have to be in Jefferson City next Monday - Thursday evening because of large school groups coming up each day and  then duties on Election night at the cacus gathering.

I want to add a little something else... I posted this in the military opinion also, but it does go along with my early voting day.  After I voted, I went to get a yard sign in support of my candidate.  The Gentleman there was a fellow veteran.  He was kind enough to give me a lovely button that reads:

A veteran is someone who, upon entering the service as a draftee or volunteer, wrote a blank check, made payable to The United States of America, for an amount to be determined "up to and including, my life."  I say, "Thank you"

This brings home what voting is, a freedom that so many have died for, will die for, and are/were more then willing to die for.....
