In December and January the cardiac death rate seems to increase sharply. Matter-of-fact in 2004, the cardiac death rate peaked on Christmas Day and New Yearís Day. Exactly why winter is prime time for heart attack is still an evolving story, but many theories exist and research continues. Read More ...

Thank you TheLights. That is nice to hear. I do a lot of research on these, but something I enjoy. I have a lot of readers stop me out in the community and talk about certain articles. Hearing from the readers is a great reward for my work.

Law101, I will send to Darrell and see if he will post. Thank you very much!

Thank you, Lois and Lights, for your interest, and thank you to Gary for sending the earthquake column.
Gary, I need to speak to you via PM regarding what arrangement you may have had with the Daily Guide for printing your columns. If you signed a contract with them, I need to see the contract language to see if it includes an exclusivity clause, and if so, for how long. I'm hesitant to reprint items that were submitted to the Daily Guide before I resigned from their employment until I see what, if anything, is in writing. You and I can negotiate our own arrangement for items that have been written and submitted after the first week of November, but for items before that, I believe in dotting my "i's" and crossing my "t's" and I want to be sure there isn't a written contract somewhere that I would be violating.
If there's no contractual problem, I'll be happy to put any column online that you submitted to the Daily Guide if you like, but I need to be sure I'm not violating the law in reprinting what are legally known as "works done for hire."
This is not a minor problem, or a merely theoretical one. GateHouse Media has already shown its willingness to sue the New York Times Corporation (owner of the Boston Globe) for stuff like linking to GateHouse's suburban Boston newspapers, and I need to be just as careful about not engaging in copyright infringement on the internet as I have been for 18 years in the printed news media. While GateHouse's lawsuit against the New York Times is bogus, there **IS** a real problem with a culture of copy-and-paste on the internet, and I don't want to engage in some of the piracy practices that have become so common online that people forget they're illegal.

Darrell, I appreciate, very greatly, your integrity and carefulness. I have no contract and Daily Guide has never paid me one penny. I started sending them articles years ago under the title: "Coroner's Talk" when I was the county coroner. I have had a long and very much appreciated rapport with them, but never any money or contract. I do not know if this counts, but they do send me the paper at no cost. I always thought that was professional courtsey to non-paid columnist; but not sure.

That answers the question. In the absence of a contract and absence of payment, you can send your column to anybody you want. I'll get the earthquake columns up tonight -- I was sent only one. Can you send me all of them?

Darrell,
Much to my shame, I can confirm that Gary was paid nothing for his hard work in producing his weekly Paramedics column. He gives a lot for little and is a credit to the county for his efforts.

We have quite a few people in Pulaski County who put that extra effort into whatever position or job they hold.  Most of us are not even aware of all that they do to help Pulaski County and it's residents.  They are the "unsung heros" in my book, and whether I agree with them 100% of the time or not, I believe both they and their opinions should be treated with the respect they have earned by going that "extra mile."

I can name 3 of them in just this one thread.

Ex-ed, I never expected any pay. And, as I have told several people, you were a pleasure to work for. You always added a picture or clip art, etc as needed to "spice-up" my article and was just an excellent editor.

My pay is when I am out to eat or at the store and someone stops and says: I know you, I read your article every week and I really enjoy....   or when someone tells me to please cover some material, or thanks me. That is my pay, and people like you, Rick, and Darrell allowing me to write and tell people about emergency medical care, ambulances and paramedics.

Thank you very much sir!

You're welcome, Gary, but don't call me sir -- I work for a living!
Keep up the great work!
