  • Valor7: I could have worded that better, we talked details, options, the pros and cons of each, in  order to arrive at the best ballot language to present to the voters. Hope that makes this clearer.

Glad to see the time in now right and I for one shall vote yes on the ballot. I would urge all others to do the sameour county is busting at the seams crimewise and no matter how many bad guys we send off there always seems to someone to replace them. The Sheriff's Office needs the help.

Sales Tax Holidays

Each year when August rolls around, it’s time to buy “back to school” supplies.  We get the list and head to the store, usually spending a couple hundred dollars so that our children are prepared for the year.  Through the past, Missouri has held a sales tax holiday on school supplies, making it a little easier on our pocketbooks.  Eighteen states throughout the country have adopted the same practice, and have had very popular feedback from citizens.

Starting this year, Missourians were able to take advantage of an additional sales tax holiday, the Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday, that took place for one week in April.  In 2008, we created Show-Me Green in effort to encourage Missourians to conserve energy while stimulating the economy.  During the weeklong event, people who purchase qualifying Energy Star certified new appliances will save the 4.225 percent state sales tax. In addition to the money saved on the purchase, Energy Star appliances reduce energy consumption by about 30 percent and can save users around $435 per year.

In addition to the two current state sales tax holidays, this week the House passed legislation creating another opportunity for Missourians to save on their state taxes.  House Bill 952, sponsored by Representative Mike Sutherland, creates an “Independence Tax Holiday”, which would take place from July 4th – July 31st.  The holiday would begin in 2009 and is set to take place each year following.   During this time, all retail purchases in Missouri would be exempt from state sales tax, including the purchase of vehicles.  The legislation is currently pending in the Senate, and I am hopeful they will step up and pass it so the Governor will have the opportunity to sign this legislation.

I have always had the basic belief that you know how to spend your hard-earned money better than the government does.  It is also interesting to hear some in the legislature say things like “we will be losing the state’s money if we do this”.  Anytime I hear that I am quick to remind them that it is NOT the state’s money, it belongs to the people that have earned it and anytime we can find a way to let them keep it and still provide necessary state services, that is what we should do.

Not only will this help families in difficult economic times by allowing them to keep more of their earnings, it will also stimulate our state’s economy.  People will use this almost month-long tax holiday to buy many of the things they need, which will create more jobs because of demand.  Washington’s idea of a stimulus package is to spend our tax dollars on pet projects which almost always have a lot of strings attached, this is the Missouri House’s idea of a stimulus package, allowing you to keep more of your dollars to use anyway you wish to.  In my opinion this is winning legislation for everyone.

In these tough economic times, we are looking to save money anywhere we can.  I encourage each of you to keep an eye out for tax holidays throughout the year.  Not only will it gives us the ability to stimulate Missouri’s economy, it gives you the chance to save on items as small as a pair of jeans or as large as a vehicle purchase.

I hope the Senate will join the House in helping our hard working families in Missouri by taking up this legislation we have sent them and passing it on to the Governor.

That is a terrific Bill.  Kudos to Representative Mike Sutherland for standing up for the people of the state of Missouri!!  And to you, Representative Day, for keeping us informed of ongoing legislation.  Thank you.
....and that night as the moon crossed the mountain, one more Coyote was heard...
