Ants inhabit 'world without sex'

An Amazonian ant has dispensed with sex and developed into an all-female species, researchers have found.  The ants reproduce via cloning - the queen ants copy themselves to produce genetically identical daughters.
This species - the first ever to be shown to reproduce entirely without sex - cultivates a garden of fungus, which also reproduces asexually.
The finding of the ants' "world without sex" is published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.  Anna Himler, the biologist from the University of Arizona who led the research, told BBC News that the team used a battery of tests to verify their findings.

Unusual evolution
By "fingerprinting" DNA of the ant species - Mycocepurus smithii - they found them all to be clones of the colony's queen.
And when they dissected the female insects, they found them to be physically incapable of mating, as an essential part of their reproductive system known as the "mussel organ" had degenerated.
Asexual reproduction of males from unfertilised eggs is a normal part of some insect reproduction, but asexual reproduction of females is "exceedingly rare in ants", wrote the researchers.
"In social insects, there are a number of different types of reproduction," explained Dr Himler. "But this species has evolved its own unusual mode."
She and her colleagues do not know exactly why this particular species has become fully asexual, and how long ago the phenomenon evolved.
They are carrying out further genetic experiments, which will enable them to estimate how long ago the evolutionary change occurred.

I would love to have a couple clones of myself!  Doing away with sex?  I'll pass on that one! ;D

Doing away with sex for reproductive purposes is what I got from Freethinker's article.

I may enjoy clones of myself but others may have a different opinion.

even with cloning you are creating a completely original person. the brain and all of your thoughts and opinions are things you develop over time. and there is no gaurantee that the genes you have provided with your clone will be expressed in exactly the same as they were throughout your life. your clone could look exactly like you, but it's highly unlikely. this new person could have a recessive hair or eye color [like the blue eyes or blond hair they are present but uncommon in your family], grow to be a different height,  any number of things really. this has been shown when cloning animals, such as dogs. the dog may look similar, but not exactly the same. when observing the behaviors or tendencies of the adult dog to the younger clone, the differences are very apparent. you get a "copy" of your pet, but it will NOT be the same dog unless you can recreate every moment throughout the history of your previous pet, and even then it would be different in many respects..

even if we could somehow keep the brain in a vegetative state and speed up the process of development to an adult to a few months instead of eighteen years, when we "wake" the clone you will have an adult with the mind of a newborn...  the only way cloning yourself would be beneficial to you as an individual would be as a brain dead body for harvesting organs, or possibly as a "vegetable" grown to adult age where you could transfer your consciousness from one brain to another. but that technology would be extremely difficult to accomplish and would involve "mapping" your brain and then recreating an exact match of an "empty" brain or memory/brain functions would be lost in the transfer..  wishful thinking but theoretically impossible...

the idea of having multiple copies of your complete self who thinks like, acts like, and cares about the same things as you in an effort to get more done and have more time for relaxation is simply wishful thinking..

the only possible benefit cloning presents to the human species would be in the event of some sort of viral epidemic that left the majority of the population infertile and in dire need of a way to keep the species able to reproduce....

It would be interesting to be able to isolate genetic mutation...

isolate genetic mutations for the purpose of what? speeding up the evolutionary process? or turning it off and staying exactly the way we are for the rest of time.     that's a scary thought.. i could honestly imagine some mad creation scientist trying to do exactly that in the face of all the proof for evolution in an attempt to make the world the way the bible says it is...
