Did anyone else catch any of the press correspondence dinner in DC the other night on tv.

I watched part of it.  Wanda Sykes was speaking when I clicked it one.  There is apparently a big discussion today about whether her comments were appropriate or not.

I thought some of them were really funny:

She asked whose idea it was a the President and Vice President to just stop in a local hamburger joint to have a hamburger, Nancy Pelosi?

Then the one about Michelle Obama touching the queen:  something to the effect of :"you patted her on the back like she had just slid into home" or something like that, it was funny.

But there were some comments I thought were inappropriate.  Like I said, I only heard about 5 minutes of it, just wondered what everybody else thought.
When I was young, I wanted to be older.  This is not what I expected!

The White House Correspondents Dinner is well known for comedians crossing the line.

Look for some good stuff at youtube.

What-The is right. The White House correspondents' dinner is well known for humor that I believe is disrespectful and irresponsible. It's basically an opportunity for the Washington press corps to lampoon and ridicule the president and his staff, and the president sometimes responds in kind.

Years ago, my circle of friends included a member of the Washington press corps for a foreign television station and two newspapers. While American-born, he had lived in Europe for years, married a foreign citizen, was fluent in several different European languages, and received a masters degree in Europe befor coming back to the United States for his doctoral degree and being hired as a Washington correspondent.

He was shocked by the disrespect that was regularly shown by American reporters toward President Clinton -- not because he agreed with Clinton (he didn't at all) but because he believed the American press corps at its upper levels had become more or less anarchistic rather than liberal, showing complete disrespect for the office of president even when the person in charge agreed with many of the reporters' biases.

I try to keep things like that in mind when I see people attacking the Pulaski County Web for attacking elected officials -- things are **FAR** worse out there at even medium-sized cities, let alone the upper levels of the media and of politics. But we also need to remember to keep our criticisms focused on what we believe an elected official has done wrong, not letting ourselves degenerate into an attack on the office and the respect we owe to our leaders.

Youre not talking about her being disrespectful and irresponsible for this are you? Not sure how that works since she was invited for this exact reason. If she was on Leno or somethin then yeah, but comedians are brought in every year for this exact reason. Im sure if she was being disrespectful there were a lot of people there that would escort her out. Its called mood. Comedians lighten it...hence why they are brought there. Oh no somebody made a joke about me.

Its an event that is supposed to be over the line.

Its about unwinding and not taking yourself too seriously, even if you are the president.

Yes, I understand that's what the White House correspondents' dinner is all about. I have a problem with the entire concept of what is done on that night. But realistically, nothing can be done about it because if any president refused to attend he'd be roasted in non-humorous ways by the media.

Imagine the uproar if Gary Knehans, Randy Skruggs, Steve Smith, DawnDee Bostwick, me, and the other local media organized a similar event lampooning our local politicians using similar language and attitudes. Some people might think the event was funny, but all of our operations would be facing boycotts from outraged friends and supporters of our local politicians.

The difference isn't that our local politicians are better than Bush or Obama; it's that in rural America people know their politicians personally and still have a certain level of respect for the office, even if we don't like the guy who is in it at the moment. That concept is utterly foreign to the upper levels of the media, and largely gone as well even in the state-level and larger city media.

Notice that people here who don't like particular politicians are saying somebody better needs to run for office, not attacking the concept of a city council or county commission's right to do what it does. That is an important difference, and it's fundamental to a free republic whose leaders are elected by their fellow citizens, as opposed to anarchistic chaos in which politicians are assumed to be out only for their own self-interest and in which people who do have ideological rather than self-centered motives are attacked as dangerous radicals.

A dangerous poison entered American political life about the time of Watergate in which people began to assume that no matter what a politician says, he's saying it only to get elected. Americans have always been used to vicious attacks on our elected officials for their political views or their actions in office, and we were horrified and outraged by politicial scandals. That's not what I'm talking about. What I'm talking about is an attitude that says **ALL** politicians act in corrupt or self-centered ways. That attitude is flat-out dangerous because it is corrosive to the foundation of the republic.

Does being married to a black man and adopting a black child help in your assessment of me being a bigot.  Maybe you should really get to know someone before you start making assumptions.  Plus my son in law is black and my grandchildren are bi racial.  Think again lawngnome, you couldn't be farther from the truth.

Or is that supposed to be further, really I want somone to tell me what is the right word to use in this instance. :)

Maybe because you used the word biggot to describe someones comment.  Biggot refers to racial discrimination.  Homophobe would have been the correct term for comments about gay/lesbians adopting.

Accusing someone of being a biggot when you dont know them shows how shallow you are, not the person you are accusing

Let's learn what words really mean before we criticise other's for how they are used:

Quote
A bigot is a person who is intolerant of or takes offense to the opinions, lifestyles or identities differing from his or her own, and bigotry is the corresponding attitude or mindset. Bigot is often used as a pejorative term to describe a person who is obstinately devoted to prejudices, especially when these views are either challenged, or proven to be false or not universally applicable or acceptable.

The origin of the word bigot and bigoterie in English dates back to at least 1598, via Middle French, and started with the sense of "religious hypocrite" Forms of bigotry may have a related ideology or world views.
