Glad to see the time in now right and I for one shall vote yes on the ballot. I would urge all others to do the sameour county is busting at the seams crimewise and no matter how many bad guys we send off there always seems to someone to replace them. The Sheriff's Office needs the help.

     I know!

And it is complex. Operation was PCSD with help from MSHP. We arrested several and are working on bringing the case to a close. I will report the results when we recieve warrants for the accused. The big boom was a flash bang device as we celebrated the 4th. Nobody got hurt.

Come on DTM.... you HAVE to know what happened!?

I know a fair amount.

However, I have a standing agreement with Sheriff King that I will stay away from unsecured major crime scenes on the condition that he gives me full access to the facts once he knows what they are. Not every local law enforcement agency has been equally cooperative, and that's why I show up at certain incidents but not at others. (No, I'm not giving agency names, I'm addressing the problem issues privately, and I am absolutely not going to publicly castigate police for things that in many cases are issues with junior or mid-level officers, not the chiefs.)

There's a lot of information I can get on a crime scene, though not all of it will be accurate. At larger newspapers, I routinely ran out to armed robberies in progress, shootings with victims down, etc. That's not safe for me (or anyone else without BOTH a badge and a gun) and potentially could make a major incident much worse. I'd much rather work with law enforcement who will get me what I need to do my job without having to take unnecessary risks to get it.

On the really, really, really, really major crime scenes when not just me, KJPW/KFBD radio and the Waynesville Daily Guide are going to be there but also KY3, KOLR-10, etc., police routinely set up incident command centers with media briefings. For cases like that, I'll be there with my laptop filing stories as I learn what's going on.

No one without a badge has any right to kick a door, and even then, they can do it only with a warrant.

Those who know me well know I don't don't back down to bullies. But the weapons I am authorized to use by the Constitution do not include search and seizure by force of arms. Reporters who get into the middle of a crime scene better have a darn good reason, and since the police have every right to order anyone out of the area, we're on thin ice if we try to insist on the right to be there, as opposed to working out agreements prior to the incident that function well for both the media and the police.

I was just kidding. Stay safe Darrell! I would be cool if you could get me a few of those flash bangs though. (Time to get up for work Katherine)

OK... thanks for the clarification. But sorry, I've got no flash-bangs.

I do know a number of "rambo-type" reporters who have little respect for law enforcement and therefore get little respect in return. I want to stay WAY WAY WAY WAY away from that kind of activity. One of my colleagues in another city actually got arrested for intruding on a crime scene and his newspaper had to put up a big fight in court to avoid a serious criminal conviction for doing his job. Given the same situation, I'm fairly sure I could have talked my way into getting the same information he got, without having to use the courts to do it. Relationships with the guys who wear a gun and badge are important and they stop a lot of problems from starting.
