Why is it in the summer the security here on Fort Wood seems to get so relaxed and lazy, you don't even have to have proper passes and inspections any more it would seem. I know several people that just drive up with there drivers license and get through. You would think after last summer they would be better about this, I mean shootings and all should of taught them a lesson.
They preach move to post be safe and live in your "army"familys community and instead it would seem if the weather is warm to hell with the security.

I have a frequent visitors pass that lets me on the base.  they do a check on you and it takes about a week before you get an answer.  Then you have to go in and get your picture taken and show all the stuff for your car.

That is probably what those people had.  hope this makes you feel a little more secure.

Why not don't worry about what other people show at the gates and take care of yourself.  If you have a question, ask the guard.  I have never come across a guard that wasn't doing his/her job properly.  People who complain and make unfounded accusations will result in the gates being closed.

Hasn't it always been that way?  How else can people get on Post...it's a Public Installation.  The museum, thriftstore, golf course, schools, etc. are for everyone.

From 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. you do not have to have a pass to get on post anymore.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that before 9/11, Ft. Wood was an open post and you didn't have to stop whatsoever.

From what I understood was that before you had to stop at the visitor center. Now before 9 you do not...like I said this is far as I was told It may not be that way
You have to let people be who they want, even if it's not what you want them to be. Thats funny.

MP's I do not think ever guarded the gates. At our old posts my husband always got stuck doing it and other infantry soldiers. But since 9/11 and gate duty needs to be 24 hours they hired civilians to do it to free up the soldiers to do otehr things.

I hate getting "randomly" selected for inspection. It is always when I have my daughters with me! Luckily they are always nice and never make me take them out.

Lazy?  I tried to get through the gate in uniform with my military ID and they made me go inside and go through all the BS to get a temp pass because I don't have the sticker on my windshield yet.  On top of having to do that, I had to get a vehicle inspection... and don't get me started on that... I hate the way they make you open your hood... hello!  I'm not the one who wants it open... you do it!  Needless to say, I was late for work.  Gosh, I was so irritated!  As for wondering where the MPs are... well... most of the military is going to civilians now to "save money."  In case you don't know... all of the chow hall workers are now civilians... they used to be military too.  Also, the administrative MOS's are being filtered out and going to civilians too.  Pretty soon, most of the military will be civilians.  We won't go into my opinion on that because it's a whole different subject.  But as for the gate and their extended hours where you don't have to get a pass... I do agree that Fort Leonard Wood has opened itself up as a "public post" and I don't think it's the gate people being lazy... I think they're just following the instructions they're given.

I agree. They are making the jobs open to civilians (which is great for the job market) BUT it is so more men and women can go overseas

K so I am woman enough to admit when I'm wrong, there not lazy I guess I was just thinking of last summer when it started out like this also and then the shootings and everything followed quickly on its heels. It just seems like crime and such goes up in the summer so I'm not sure why they choose to do it right now. However I rarely understand half the stuff that goes on in the gov. and there discissions.

You are right crime does go up in the summer, but I don't think they are worried to much about our local crime, what the base is worried about is much broader.  I can tell you from first hand experience if you have something in your car that is going to go boom, THEY are not LAZY or even RELAXED.  Try getting any tests with nuclear medicine, IT is actually kinda scary when you see all the people come out of the wood work and in a hurry too.  Trust me they are not near as relaxed as they seem.  They are still watching for certain stuff and doing random checks.   Like I said try getting on after nuclear test ITS REALLY COOL.

all the branches use civilians more now. It frees the military for more important duties. They are better able to defend us when they are more effectively used in war fighting tasks.
