Glad to see the time in now right and I for one shall vote yes on the ballot. I would urge all others to do the sameour county is busting at the seams crimewise and no matter how many bad guys we send off there always seems to someone to replace them. The Sheriff's Office needs the help.

Paramedicís Corner: Motorcycle crashes

Ambulance Director Gary Carmack

Paramedicís Corner: Important methods to prevent motorcycle crashes
The first motorcycle crash I worked was when I was a young paramedic in the 1970s. While riding on Highway 28, the motorcyclist hit the back of a car, flew over the top and landed in front of the car. Sadly, though he was wearing a helmet, the trauma was more than he could survive and he was killed instantly. Since that day long ago, I have worked several more motorcycle fatalities as a paramedic, as the county coroner, and most recently as deputy coroner. While motorcycle fatalities are nowhere near as frequent as fatalities involving other vehicles, they remain tragic and it seems we had more than usual this year. Good article Gary.  Do you think there may be a correlation between the increased deaths of motorcyclists & the number of motorcycles on the road?  That's one figure many of our political friends like to throw out there to show that riding a motorcycle is becoming increasingly dangerous.  However, most forget to compare that increase in deaths with registered motorcycles on the road, or licensed motorcycle operators.  Many times (although not all) the "death rate" will actually decrease when you throw those other two variables in there.

Also, don't forget to remind folks that a helmet is not a guarantee to save your life.  Look at the DoT standards for helmets and see if you really think a helmet is going to save you.  See what the federal government thinks acceptable for protecting your head.
The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. Just_a_Biker, I agree with you 100%. Matter-of-fact I take a little heat from my liberal EMS colleagues at the state, because although I mention helmets as part of possible prevention, for those who want to wear one, I actually have little faith that they make much difference in bad crashes and most importantly...it should be the rider's choice. Note in my story, my first MC crash the person had a good helmet on, as many others I have taken care of...and it made no difference. So, I don't know. I certainly think people should be free to make that decision.

I know you've caught some flak for this issue in the past, and I applaud you for your realistic views & opinions.  What many people fail to realize is that the helmet we are required to wear is only rated to protect you from a fall of less than 20" at a speed of less than 20mph.
(I'm going from memory here, so those numbers may be slightly different, but they're awful close)
Basically, if you fall off your bike in your driveway or in a parking lot the helmet will prevent head injuries.  Anything above and beyond that the helmet actually has the potential to create MORE injuries than it MAY prevent.  I didn't realize any of this until I had a very close friend killed in a very minor accident.  He was actually killed when the chin strap from his helmet crushed his larynx and suffocated him.
