News Release
Child Pornography Arrest
Pulaski County Sheriff J. B. King
Jan. 28, 2010

As the result of an investigation that began in December of 2009 Pulaski County deputies on Jan 27, 2010, arrested a resident of Pulaski County on a seven count warrant for child pornography offenses.

The case began with a referral lead that had been generated by a detective with the Independence Missouri Police Department. The detective was assigned to the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force. This referral lead was sent to the South Central Missouri Computer Crime Task Force. The Sheriff’s Offices of Dent and Pulaski counties are members of this task force and detectives from both counties began to investigate this case.

On December 11, 2009, a search warrant was served by Pulaski County deputies at a residence located at 14145 Tombstone Lane in Pulaski County.  A total of three computers along with computer accessories were taken pursuant to the warrant. The male occupant of the residence was interviewed, booked into custody and then released pending further investigation.

At a later date a statement of probable cause was sent to the Pulaski County Prosecutor requesting charges in this case. On Jan. 27, 2010, a warrant for seven class B child pornography offenses was issued for the suspect. The evening of Jan. 27, 2010, Pulaski County deputies arrested Benjamin Morrow, age 43, of 14145 Tombstone Lane, St. Robert, Mo.

Morrow is currently being held in the Pulaski County jail pending the posting of a $500,000.00 cash only bond. The charges filed against Mr. Morrow are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of these charges must be presented in a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence. There will be no further press releases on this case.

I think that's why the name sounded so familiar now that you mention it...  Saw the mugshot on the other thread about this though, and it's not the plumber Morrow... at least not the guy I see driving the Morrow plumbing truck anyway

Yep, nuff said there (if ya know what I mean)

There is one on the Laclede county list.  Not the same guy.
"In order to be a leader of men, a man has to receive an education in his own country, among his own people, and to grow up in surroundings steeped with the traditions and psychology of his countrymen.  Not only did Western education not fulfill that condition, but it tended to wean a young man from the traditions and customs of his country."

Looks to be that way. Now inmates can treat him how he deserves after this. Sorry but there is no excuse for any kind of child nudity/sex with children unless you are a child also(and not mentally. physically)

JB

I'm at the Joint Airport Board meeting right now but plan to finish and post my article (with a mug shot) early this evening.

Since this discussion has taken a nasty turn with comments about what will happen to this suspect, I should say that I've read the probable cause statement detailing the stuff police found on his computer. It's not even close to as bad as a lot of other similar criminal cases I've seen in the past. I'll be giving this a fair amount of attention and I'm sure some people will get really angry, but some newspapers I've worked for in larger cities wouldn't have given this story more than a few paragraphs. It's not in the same category as the child porn cases you read about in larger newspapers, or cases I've covered in the past as a reporter.

Maybe I'm jaded, but I think people familiar with what happened in Abu Ghraib and similar cases will think this is pretty minor by comparison, except -- and this is a VERY BIG "except" -- that it involves children. That is, of course, a very big deal and what makes the difference between a crime and stuff openly sold at our local "adult entertainment" establishments.

Im just havin a little fun.

That is where the problem does come in though. These cases are crimes against children. I dont care if the pics are of 16 year olds. Its still illegal and they are still children. People who commit crimes against children are sick people...no matter how small or big it is.

Im not blowing up on you either for tryin to say it wasnt nothin big. I know youre just tryin to tell everyone it isnt somethin really bad and really nasty.

He looks familiar to me and I think I know why.  I hope I am wrong.  That is as much as I can/will say on him in that respect.  Crime against a child?  Intentional?  Well, my thoughts have been shown here before.  Hope he likes Bubba when he arrives and Bubba finds out what he is down for.

Since the Facebook page Jax posted will indicate Mr. Morrow's employer and a number of people here will know him from that connection, I should probably indicate that I asked Sheriff King whether there are any work-related connections in this child pornography bust. The answer is "no."

That answer might change down the road as the investigation continues, but for now it's probably best that his employment not be discussed because as far as I know it had nothing to do with the charges, he didn't have a position of management or leadership with his employer, and he didn't have work-related duties that put him into a position of authoritative contact with potential child victims.

Those who know me are fully aware that this is the kind of story I'd be all over if there were a work-related connection in this case, but as far as I can tell, there is no reason to drag Mr. Morrow's employer through the mud when his employer seems to be completely uninvolved.

Darrell, Thanks for the info on the employer not being involved in anyway.

You're welcome -- this story could have turned into something really bad really quickly if the out-of-town media had done the same homework I did on Mr. Morrow. I don't want to see his employer blamed unless there is a work-related connection, and so far I don't see one.

If that changes I will be all over this like ugly on an ape.

I've covered sex offenses for two decades as a reporter, and not only do I know that stories on sex offenses get a **LOT** of readers, I also strongly believe the public has a right to know that their children are safe and that the people they trust to protect their children are actually doing so.

The big differences between this case and several recent sex offense cases in this area include that the accused offender in this case did not have any work-related contact with children or other likely victims, the employee was not in a position of authority or public trust representing his employer, and there's no reason to believe any of the alleged offenses happened at work.

Darrell, have you looked into his personal small business venture? There is a large question in my mind concerning that there may have been opportunity in that arena. I am sure that I am not the only one wondering.

Darrell, have you looked into his personal small business venture? There is a large question in my mind concerning that there may have been opportunity in that arena. I am sure that I am not the only one wondering.

I'm investigating.

From my experience covering this stuff, a fair number of people who are involved in the pornography industry -- both the legal stuff and the illegal stuff -- are also either amateur photographers who use very good camera equipment and have made it a fairly expensive hobby or are professional photographers who have made it into their business because they have legitimate talents with a camera and decide to make money to buy better camera equipment. While it's certainly possible to create pornography with a cheap point-and-shoot camera or even a cell phone, I've seen camera equipment and photo editing software confiscated by police in child porn cases that was equal to or better than the most expensive cameras and software in the photo departments of most major metropolitan newspapers. Good cameras don't come cheap, and running a photo studio is a good way to come up with the money to buy good equipment.

A key problem here is that the lines can get very blurry between legal "soft porn," hardcore stuff that is probably legal despite being very grotesque but which might be considered obscenity in some places based on community standards (such as a rural Southern town), and illegal stuff.

How do you tell the difference between:

1) an amateur photographer who likes taking pictures of seductive poses by "barely legal" 18-year-old girls from a local high school, paying them $100 per photo, and posting them on the internet,

2) a professor at a San Franscisco college who is an award-winning photographer for his professional portraits of 14-year-old "artistic nudes" and sells them in $80 hardcover glossy albums, using the artistic nudity exemption from obscenity laws to create and profit from what in a different context would be clearly illegal child exploitation,

3) a teenage boy who after a breakup with his high school girlfriend, takes nude cell phone photos she sent to him and sells them for $100 to an exploitation website or even posts them for free on a file-sharing website, and

4) a Mob-connected purveyor of child porn involving 15-year-olds, often from Latin America, Asia, or Eastern Europe?

Unfortunately, the answer to that question is frequently impossible to determine apart from a very expensive jury trial, and because of that, most prosecutors often don't even bother to file the cases if they're questionable.

My point here is that even if this person was using his photography business to take nude photographs -- which is a very distinct possibility, considering his admitted interests -- that doesn't necessarily mean what he did was illegal. Apart from a very angry and very talented prosecuting attorney, it may be impossible to meet the standards of proof necessary to take this to a jury, win a conviction, and then have the conviction sustained upon appeal.

Just because something is grotesque and extremely offensive to most people doesn't mean it's illegal -- in fact, it might be perfectly legal to sell it at our local adult entertainment businesses. The very worst of the stuff confiscated last month in this search warrant, even if it involved 18-year-old girls from Waynesville High School's cheerleading squad who looked like they were 15, would have been perfectly legal.

That's why most people who create and sell pornography -- even really, really bad stuff involving children, bondage, and rape -- get away with it. We live in a country where people are innocent until proven guilty, and it is often extremely difficult to prove that a photo was actually taken of a minor when we don't have any way to know who the person in the photograph was or when the photograph was taken.

I understand Artistic Photography. Even Nudes. Theres nothing artistic about a young girl posed for intercourse with a dog. I hope they find the ability to hang this man. Ive heard arguments that Child porn keeps sick bastards from touching real kids. I dont buy it. I have 2 girls in his preferred age range .Im ready to hang em high just knowing that.

I understand your point, but the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that even aggravated rape of a child is not grounds for the death penalty. Louisiana tried that, but their law got struck down by the Supreme Court. Unless someone is killed, the death penalty can't even be considered by a jury anywhere in the United States.

Furthermore, while I share your sentiments about what should happen to people involved with child sexual abuse and child porn, which necessarily involved sexual abuse because children cannot consent to these disgusting activities, I've seen enough arguments by defense lawyers that I would no longer be surprised by **ANYTHING** coming out of a jury on pornography cases.

The point of my post is that what I consider to be obvious pornography that should get somebody thrown in jail may be something that at least one person on a 12-member jury thinks should be allowed to be sold publicly in our local adult entertainment establishments. All it takes is one juror to get a mistrial.

Beyond that, all it takes is one very good lawyer to create confusion (i.e., "reasonable doubt") in 12 jurors to get an acquittal. Doing that in San Francisco or New York City may be a lot easier than around here, but its not impossible.

Oh, by the way, if it was somebody on the Pulaski County Web who decided to create a Facebook account last Saturday full of porn links and then send me a "friend request" -- I didn't buy your bait. I reported the account to Facebook and I hope you're deleted soon. Even though I do have hundreds of "facebook followers," I do monitor their postings and I take appropriate action when warranted.

Somebody tried a similar tactic years ago before Facebook was invented when I was covering a sex crimes case in another state and it didn't work then, either. I'm just as disgusted by this stuff in private as I am in public.
