I may be able to hire a freelance sportswriter for the Pulaski County Daily News who would be covering high school sports.

Here are two sample articles that have been submitted. They have **NOT** been posted on the Pulaski County Daily News website. I would appreciate comments, pro or con, regarding the articles, and also about what sports people in our area would like to see covered.

Private messages are welcome, and in the case of anything that's significantly negative, I'd very much prefer that messages be sent to me privately. I've warned this potential freelancer that few things attract more complaints and negative comments than coverage of sports, but I don't need to scare him off before I've even made a job offer.

Fair disclosure: If I'm going to have significant sports coverage it's going to have to be advertiser-sponsored. I do not have the budget to be adding additional staff without adding additional advertisers, so while I want people to voice their ideas on more things they'd like to see covered, they're not going to happen unless the idea can attract advertiser sponsorship.

Waynesville varsity baseball team falls to Hillcrest, 16 to 6

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. (April 6, 2010) -- The Waynesville Tigers got off to a good start with a home run by Patrick Holt on the first pitch, but that was the highlight of the game for the Tigers.

Between innings two and five, Hillcrest hit three homeruns by Dillion Hanson and Michael Esther, respectively. In the sixth inning, Waynesville brought in two runs off a home run from Damion Fadl and a two-run single by Kevin Williams to make the score 7 to 6. In the top of the seventh, a grand slam by Hanson opened up the score and by the end of the seventh, Hillcrest won 16 to 6.

Dilllion Hanson gets game ball for his two home runs and seven runs batted in.

"Going 3 for 4 with two runs batted in was a good game for me, but I wish the team had done better," said Williams, the Tigers' second baseman.

Waynesville's next home game is Thursday, April 8, at 4:30 p.m., where the Tigers will face the Camdenton Lakers.

Waynesville varsity baseball defeated by Camdenton, 12 to 3

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. (April 8, 2010) -- In tonight's game versus Camdenton, the Waynesville Tigers played hard but were defeated.

The Tigers' offense was stagnant for much of the game with zero runs through six innings, but Kevin Williams showed himself a strong hitter, bringing in two runs in the seventh inning to put the Tigers on the scoreboard.

Throughout the game, Camdenton steadily put up seven runs through six innings, but in the seventh inning they scored five runs.

Sam Dowling entered the game in the seventh inning after Waynesville had already allowed five runs in just one inning, and Dowling's pitching finished the inning without allowing any more Camdenton runs.

"The RBIs felt all right, but I wish the team had scored more runs," Williams said.

In other notes, Lexavier Mcclain scored one run off a wild pitch and Matt Hestenes had three singles tonight.

So are you just looking for capsules or actual game stories?
I have it on good authority that the Hokey-Pokey really IS what it's all about.

So are you just looking for capsules or actual game stories?

That's actually my question -- what do people want?

I have my own ideas of what works in news reporting (more detail is better, in my view), but when it comes to sports, my ideas are not based on a good idea of what sports readers want.

Well, I can tell you from my viewpoint, it depends on my favorite team..If its my team, I want detail, if not, then just capsules is fine, so really there is no clear cut answer...you recap in the first graf, then go into detail...if all one wants is scores, then they stop reading after the the recap; if its their team, then they read the whole story...But, if it is something out of the ordinary then everyone will read the whole story...it really is like general news, same concept....just depends on where your interest lies.
I have it on good authority that the Hokey-Pokey really IS what it's all about.

As the parent of a Wayensville High School Grad that played baseball for the Tigers...details..details...details..  Who was pitching? How many innings pitched?  Stats of other teammates as well.   It does the team no justice to give as little details as the potential writer gave..even if the team is losing.  Maybe talk with the coach afterwards and get a statement from him.  But of course that is just my opinion.

Thank you... and for others too, please keep giving opinions.

I have not yet made a final decision but I'm strongly leaning toward hiring a sports freelancer to cover Waynesville High School sports, and possibly some or all of the Frisco League as well. If I do that, I want opinions from parents, players, and other current and potential readers of the Pulaski County Daily News on what sports they want covered and how they want them to be covered.

Covering sports is difficult. Sports stories generate huge amounts of criticism and complaints, and up until recently I've resisted trying to do sports coverage based on the belief that it is not worth the problems it causes.

If I'm going to do this at all, I want to do it right, knowing that it is impossible to please everyone -- especially if a team is regularly losing, but also even if it is doing well.

So please keep giving comments. I am taking them very, very seriously.

WAYNESVILLE- In local sports, the Waynesville Tigers won a big game against the Kansas City Royals in a touch and go 23 inning 1-0 shhot out. Billy Joe Rae Migilicuty pitch a complete shut out against the Major league baseball team, who were baffled by his 12 mph fast ball.
NEW YORK—Players, coaches, fans, and Commissioner Bud Selig expressed concern for the state of professional baseball Monday after MLB's highly anticipated Opening Day was "completely ruined" by a rash of strikeouts that began during the afternoon games and didn't end until the day was over. "I know players can be a little rusty, but there were strikeouts in literally every single game," said Selig, adding that in some cases there had been more than one strikeout per inning. "I want to assure the fans that things will improve. If these batters put in a little more effort and try to focus, we don't have to have another strikeout this season." Selig, who also condemned MLB hitters for an unreasonable number of fly-outs, pop-ups, and groundouts, threatened to cancel the 2010 season after learning the league's pitchers gave up 96 walks
BOSTON—Catcher Jason Varitek's entrance into the Boston clubhouse Tuesday was punctuated by startled shouts and the clatter of dropped objects, as his Red Sox teammates explained that they had all just assumed the veteran player had died. "I could have sworn he died after the All-Star break," second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who sent flowers and a card to Varitek's family, told reporters. "I don't remember seeing him on base at all last season, much less in the lineup or catching. I thought that's why we got Victor [Martinez], because Jason was dead. Right?" Though Pedroia insisted that it was good to see his teammate again, he was still not entirely convinced that Varitek was not dead after watching him take a round of batting practice.
New York- Mark McGwire in town visiting the Statue of Liberty and buying some Coney Island Hot Dogs to take back to his home in Irvine, California has finally admitted, after more than a decade of denial, that he did in fact take Altoids during his baseball career.
McGwire said that he did not do it to gain an unfair advantage, but that the did it to make sure that he had the freshest breath possible. He said that he granted dozens of interviews on a daily basis and he did not want for any of the sports writers to write that Mark McGwire is one hell of a homerun hitter, but wow, his breath could knock down a Missouri mule.
McGwire says that at the time he really did not think that it was such a big deal. But he realizes now that apparently it was because it has kept him from getting elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. When asked if his friend and fellow baseball competitor Sammy Sosa also took Altoids, Mark answered that he did not know.
He did say that he remembers that Sammy was more into Tic Tacs during the 1998 homerun race, in which he (McGwire) broke Roger Maris' record by hitting 62 home runs in one season. When Sammy Sosa was asked to comment he responded in broken English. "I know nossing about what Marky ease talking about. I dunt take ticky tackys or nossing like dat to make my breathing smell more bedder, tank ju too many."
In a related story. Ex-teammate of Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco was asked to make a statement regarding McGwire finally admitting to using Altoids. Canseco said, "I told everyone, but no one would $#&^*%@ listen to me!"

If Taz is serious and if he wants to volunteer to cover the Frisco League I'd be interested.

Key word is volunteer, at least for now.

I would love to find a "sports nut" willing to volunteer for the outlying schools with a paid freelancer for the Waynesville district, where I **MUST** have someone who is totally committed and reliable if I am going to do it at all.

You should hire someone with a smart phone so they can give real time updates in the shoutbox. They could also get a twitter account and you can put a twitter feed widget on your website so you can get live updates there. People also can get live updates sent to their phone via text message through their twitter account by subscribing, for free, to the sports writers twitter account. It would be nice to get a short recap of an inning, quarter, or period as the game is going. It isn't difficult to do, and the best part is that it wouldn't cost anything. Also, you should hire someone with a camera. Pictures are nice.

prE4chEr, have you considered the position?  I've followed your writings for quite some time now and without a doubt, you have talent.  I'm surprised DTM hadn't asked you already.  I would hope DTM wouldn't allow differences of belief, or lack there of, to influence him.

I use to follow Mike Royco (I started as a preteen reading his works), and you could very well be in line with him....... just something to consider!

I think my reputation is far too negative for him to even consider it. Besides, I think he might already have someone. I have read sports articles on the PCD news.

I can't believe DTM would be so easily swayed by "bad reputation"  (more conflict of philosophy between you two, than actual reputation) over quality writing skills.  There were many people, including myself, who disagreed with a few of Mike Royco's stance on certain issues, BUT that never stopped me from reading and enjoying his writing skills!!  Hell, he even won a Pulitizer Prize!

I'm sure he wouldn't be swayed by reputation over quality. The truth is, I wasn't a serious option because I didn't apply for the job. I might have if I knew about it. Oh well. Maybe next year.

Intelligence or reputation isn't a requirement for reporting on sports events. But a  tendency to repeat advertisements is.
