I was stopped tonight by a State Trooper and informed my tags were expired. The sticker says Sept 2010. I questioned him and said I thought I had till the end of the month? He said he does this for a living and its the 1st of the month. I personally wasnt aware of this and will check further into it but Im passing this along to keep anyone else from getting a $80.00 ticket

Same here!
Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, So love the people who treat you right, Forget the ones who don't, and believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. Missouri license plates must be renewed during the expiration month or before. You can renew them up to six months early, and you have up to three convenient renewal options. You may renew online at www.plates.mo.gov  if a Personal Identification Number (PIN) appears on your renewal notice, you may renew by mail following the instructions on that same notice, or you may visit one of Missouriís over 180 license offices.
As per the MO DEPT of REVENUE at http://dor.mo.gov/motorv/renewing.php

Tags expire on the first day of the month on the tag.  Most of the time you are allowed to go to the end of the month and are allotted a grace period with no penalty for renewal, but they are expired on the first day.

I have been wrong a time or two but if my memory serves me, I am correct about this.  The funny thing is I was jsut talking to someone else about this the other day and he was arguing with me about it.

You are correct Mike.  I had the same arguement as you did with one of my co workers. However I did NOT write a ticket if it was during the expiration month.

The Trooper is correct, tags expire on the first day of the month, grace period until the last day of the month. As a normal rule MSHP does not issue a sept. ticket in sept.

dixonbob did you get a real ticket?

The future prosecutor is not wrong.  The MSHP is wrong.  Mr. Hillman's quote is directly from the website.
"Missouri license plates must be renewed during the expiration month or before"  I think the person who got the ticket could fight it.  Take the page from the webpage and show it to the judge.  Done.

Can Eeyore, er I mean Mr. Hillman, uh whoever help me? This thread has confused me as to who said what, what is what, and what shall we ever do!

Yes- - that was ME-- not Kevin Hillman on that post-- sorry if I confused you.  But I did that that quote STRAIGHT FROM THE DMV website---
Sounds like they need to be clarifying things on their webiste.

That's  what I get for not looking closer.  I was actually answering Dixon Bob's post where he said the prosecutor was wrong.  Should have went and looked myself.  That's how people get in trouble.  But OK, since it was eyeore, she was not wrong, the MSHP are wrong.  According to the website you have the whole month to get your tags renewed.  If you got a ticket you could get it  removed, based on the information on the web page.

So what that means is if you register your car on the 5th of September then the tags were good from September first and end the following year on the last day of the 12th month.  That is saying they end on the last day of August.  At least that is the way I remember it.

I do believe you generally get till the end of the month as a grace period without a penalty for tax purposes, but they are expired on the last day of the 12th month.  Read the whole 301.030 and I think you will agree.  That is kind of like 18,000lb or above tags, you expire on the last day of the year, however for tax purposes they actually don't expire I believe till the 8th day of February, Its an odd time period, buts its for tax purposes.  Don't quote me on the exact time, but its close.
