Wondering if this will also include congress etc.  Or are they again exempting themselves?  I can support the move as long as they are included AND there are some moves to reduce the deficit created by this administration.  Fiscal restraint and reduction of an overbearing government.  The first thing they could do is to revoke obamacare and have congress go on a part time basis with no perks.

I get it but it makes me sad for them as well. I think cutting spending would be a much better thing.

They view this as cutting spending.  YOu don't really think they will cut spending on their pet projects do you?  Or themselves?

I agree, I have no problem with not getting a raise for two years, just make sure NOBODY in the Government gets a raise, except the ACTIVE DUTY military.  They should still get a cost of living raise.

Of course, you realize this amounts to a pay cut.  As I said in another thread, my insurance went up $53.00 a month. Oh well, at least I have a job and insurance.  Thank you God.

Although I despise our government "not country", this freeze is merely a symbolic gesture at the expense of dedicated employees, most of whom are just trying to get buy.  Federal employee salaries "that's everyone including the military" is 6 percent of our total budget.  Unemployment benefits are 4 percent alone.  That's 3/4 of our federal working force.  The supposed freeze would cut a mere 1/10 of 1 percent of the total yearly federal budget.  That's a joke!

We've got approximately 234 embassies world wide!!!  Yes, 234!!!  It seems like we have our presence in just about every nook and cranny of the world, many of whom don't want us there to begin with.  I'd like to see us our embassies limited in scope to countries of significance.  Ross Perot recommended this about 18 years ago.  I agree.

I'd like to see about half of government functions handed back to the states where they can be better managed, minus California, Illinois, and New York.

Itís 1.4 % not that big of deal besides they would take most of back in taxes anyway.  What worries me is that the republicans are also looking at unpaid furloughs now that will hurt. I can afford no raise but not get paid even for a day will not be good and that will cut into my spending. Donít really think it will happen but the fact they are even talking about is not good.

when congress doesn't spend more, they view what they didn't spend as a pay cut.

it's a sham.

It's unfortunate but human resources always seem to be the first target with regard to debt reduction.  The military is safe because we're at war but don't hold your breath.  Remember how the military was hollowed out after the first Gulf War?  And one wonders why morale is so low among government employees.  Remember, our bloated government didn't get this way over night.  We the sheeple have allowed this nonsense to go on for decades and now everything is coming to a head.  We've borrowed, squandered, abused, neglected, and spent ourselves into the toilet.  Remember the peace dividend that congress was so eager to spend prior to 9/11?  They'll do it again given the opportunity.

It's sad but congress will just keep on kicking the can "our nation" down the road until the Chinese cut off the purse strings.  At that point we'll all truly feel the pain.

Letting the contractors take over government organizations didn't help either.

The problem is the pay freeze may reduce forward spending it does nothing to cut the current problem.  They need real cuts to reduce spending from present levels.

pay freeze does not = less spending, it = the same spending, no increase and no decrease.

and

pay reduction = less spending

and

pay hike (or raise) = more spending

I don't see why you all don't see that pay freeze = less spending....that is sure as hell the way my company sees it...

if it's an increase that otherwise would have happened, then it is indeed less spending.

Your playing a budget to budget game like the government and you will never reduce REAL cost.   You have to reduce  spending from an actual level not  reduce money you haven't spent.  Reduce the number people presently employed by 25% would save real money

And put how many people out of work?If you will read the article you will see how they are saving money. Personally I donít see why the DOD budget is off limits.   Get rid of the contactors that make over 100,000 year. The military use to be self-sufficient. I know a woman who made over a 100 grand managing swimming pools. Why are there private bodyguards? There are a lot of ways that DOD  could cut spending.

I don't think cutting the DoD budget is a good idea, now if they want to streamline I'm all for it!  We have a lot more civilians doing jobs that used to be done by Troops, arguably because they need every boot on the ground in the combat zone.  But, lets look at things that are being done by civilians that COULD be done by our military men & women.

I know everyone's first thought is "cut the contractors, they're paid too much anyway" and with some I agree.  BUT, there are many contractors out there that put in a whole lot more hours & are more productive than our civil service employees & military alike.  It's simple; if a contractor doesn't perform they are gone in a day, but try firing a GS employee and see what happens...

I heard again on the radio tonight that the current house is still trying to pass a bill that extends the unemployment benefits to 99 weeks.  I am angry that they will freeze pay on people who are working and continue to pay people who aren't.   Also, when people receive unemployment benefits they will use that money to pay their bills, nothing left for luxury items.  People who are working are the ones who stimulate the economy, yet they are the ones that are having their salaries frozen.  Like I said, I am fine with not getting a raise for two years or more if needed, but they need to freeze everybody elses pay too.

If you want to know why the DoD has been turned over to civilian contractors, follow the money.  Dick Cheney, in the last days of Bush 1, changed all of the policies to turn over tons of cash to private contractors, then promptly formed Halliburton and cashed in.  Then sniff around which president expanded the government to a size never before seen in history.  That would be Bush 2.

They just said on Fox news that the pay freeze dos not effect congress or their staff.

Fox news is telling the truth for once; unfortunately they only give you half truths so they can spin the story to fit their political narrative. Fox news is right that this federal employee pay freeze doesn't effect congressmen, but they left out that it doesn't effect them because they already froze their pay earlier this year.

W did spend too much of our money, but what was the catalyst? 9/11.

the problem with some of the jobs the military used to do was what happened when they deployed. anyone remember when the facility engineers on base went from a military and civilian mix to a contractor? the soldiers went back to engineer companies. the other branches do a lot of contracting out of services military used to do. base maintenance, dining halls. it was supposed to have more military available for deployments but also prevented unfinished projects from sitting unfinished and deteriorating while waiting for the military to return.

Obama has proposed to Freeze the income of the middle class, Federal, Union workers that are a large part of his base.

He has thrown his constituents under the bus for votes so that he will have a shot at getting reelected. (Hey it worked for Clinton)

Then his supporters scream about Dick Cheney forming Halliburton? Which was actually formed in 1919...

Isn't it sad the way politicians will scream about cutting Police, Fire, and Emergency services before their pet projects and political hacks will blindly follow like sheep to slaughter?

As the article says it is for FY2011 which is one year not the two years for other employees.  So I guess Fox was 3/4 correct
