Hi,

My father was in the Army middle 60's and used to work in the Jungle Room in downtown Waynesville, Mo.  Obviously it is long since closed, but whatever happened to the building and its former owner.  If anyone knows, any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

The building is still there, If I remember right it was the last building on the right heading toward St. Robert up the hill.
Okie will Know.  ;D
As far as pictures go to the old court house museum and talk to Marge.

I thought it was torn down. It was where the parking lot is. The owner passed away several years ago.

Actually it was burnt down, the county bought the property and it is now a parking lot, the owner has been dead for several years

Thanks for the replies.  May I ask what parking lot you are referring to?  I've only been to Waynesville myself once and that was this summer long enough to get a few pictures of downtown and a couple other points that my father may or may not have remembered.  He would also like to know what happened to the old theatre and apparently there was a hotel near main street downtown?  Sorry if I seem vague, but I am going on his memories from around 1965 :-)

The hotel that used to be across the bridge on the city route (main street) is now a funeral home.  The movie theatre has not been in operation for quite a while.  It kept flooding.  There is a gas station on that site now, built up a little further from the river.  The parking lot is where the old Jungle Room used to be.  It wasn't there in 1965.  I think there used to be a motel right at the bottom of the Waynesville hill too, on the left.  That is now being used as apartment and some office space.
When I was young, I wanted to be older.  This is not what I expected!

Do you know where it was at in 65?  From what my father has told me it started in a small building across the bridge.  (From what he told me it sounds like the building where the pool hall is now)  He said that the owner then moved it into town but when I show him Main St as it is now, he can't seem to pinpoint it.

I appreciate the info on the hotels.  I had wondered if the funeral home was one of them when I was down there, but I have not obviously point of reference.

Are you asking about the hotel or the Jungle Room?  I don't remember the Jungle Room myself but from what people are saying, it was in the first lot on the left as you enter Waynesville.  That building has been torn down and it is now a city parking lot.  If you come down the Waynesville hill, it is on the left right after you go through the stop light.  I was saying the parking lot was not there in 65 so your dad would not remember that.

I don't know what pool hall you are talking about, I don't think there is not a pool hall in Waynesville now.

the jungle room parking lot is at the bottom of the hill on the left, it would of been the 1st building on the left as you entered the downtown area.  the old theather was on the right , last building before the bridge which was later a gas station built after it was torn down.  the last movie i seen there was the legend of boggey creek.  had nightmares for months after that movie

The last movie I seen there was E.T. in 82 or 83.
Shortly after that a black guy, last name Johnson set it on fire.
Then  it was torn down if memory serves me right???

Thanks for all the information everyone.  It has been appreciated.  I was actually off by a year.  He was down there in 66 and 67.  From what he told me, the place originally started across the bridge and then moved into where it stayed until it burned down.  Used to be known as "Jungle Jim" when he worked there.

If anyone ever finds or hears about where to get some pics of the old place or the town from back then, let me know.  I am located in Virginia, so a trip to the courthouse isn't doable, at least not anytime soon.

The last movie I saw was "Last Tango in Paris" in 1972.  Don't remember going to any other movies there.  Oh wait, late 1970, early 80s, hmmmm    (((**&^^%     :wee_fly: yeah, I may not remember.
