An update on Linda Campbell, from Ray's page.
"Linda rested comfortably all night long. Some brief coughing spells, but she's been doing that for several days. She welcomed quite a few of her friends with her beautiful smile. And she smiled at me and told me she loved me. Life is basicaly good."

Say prayers for Linda and also Ray C. These are trying times.

Gary Porter, who many of us know from his roles as a former city administrator and with the Salvation Army, announced this at the Chamber of Commerce lunch on Wednesday. I wasn't sure how widely Linda wanted it known, but her cancer is quite aggressive and quite advanced.

Those who want to send her cards, notes, etc. should do it soon.

Love you with all my heart, praying for you with all my soul, and remembering with great delight the decades of joyful, wonderfully happy musical adventures we've had together my sweet Linda and Ray. Thank you for the powerful love and kindness you have given me; always believing in me, supporting me, teaching me...helping to make me who I am today. I love you, my darlins-Ms.B.

From Ray's Facebook Page:

Arrangements will be made Sunday afternoon at the funeral home in Dixon that has cared for so many of Linda's family and friends. Thanks again to all who have shown their love and support.

To be clear, that is when the family will go to make arrangements, NOT the day of the funeral

I've posted an announcement on the Pulaski County Daily News Facebook page with a link to this thread. I don't think Linda will mind now if people know that in addition to being the circulation manager for the Waynesville Daily Guide, she has been an active participant on the Pulaski County Web and the "other board" for many years -- even longer than me, and I date back to 2002 on the Pulaski County Web.

I could never say this publicly until today because I would never do anything to put Linda's job at risk, but Linda was almost a perfect example of the transition from old media to new media. She was a walking stereotype of the staff members that used to haunt old-style newsrooms; she would have fit in quite well in the 1950s-era newsrooms of my mother's day. I can easily imagine her sitting behind a battered old-fashioned Underwood manual typewriter clacking out copy with a stained ashtray full of cigarettes on her desk and a bottle of Scotch in the top drawer, growling out nasty comments to people who bothered her when she was trying to get work done. That description is intended as a compliment, by the way -- I respect Linda and twenty to thirty years ago there were still a lot of people like her around.

Most news media people of that pre-computer generation never made the transition to the internet. Some did, but I can't think of anyone from that era who threw herself into the internet more than Linda. If the Daily Guide had been smarter, it would have created something like the Pulaski County Web and put Linda in charge of it. She was a voracious hunter for facts, and if something was going on somewhere that might be of interest to Pulaski County readers, she was hunting down details. When other people in the Daily Guide tried to ignore the Pulaski County Web, she was on this website tracking down information and passing it on to reporters. Her research went far beyond this site -- if reporters were willing to listen, she could provide background on businesses, crimes, or government officials that nobody else in the newsroom would even think of checking.

People like Linda weren't unusual in the newsrooms of the 1950s, 1960s, or even 1970s. It used to be that newspapers had to have lots of "behind the scenes" people on composition staffs and in other positions who may never have had the title of a reporter or a researcher and officially had nothing to do with the newsgathering operations of the newspaper, but knew everybody in town and routinely got news tips which they passed on to the reporters who typically were new in town and often fairly inexperienced. Newspaper staffs used to be filled with people like Linda -- blue-collar types who loved news, read voraciously, and had the gut instincts, curiosity, and just plain nosiness that are key to making a newspaper work.

Computerization made many of the back-office positions redundant, and newspaper staffs today have only a tiny fraction of the people they once had. Many people like Linda were the casualties of downsizing long ago. Since reporters usually move on after a few years to larger communities, people like Linda were the institutional memories of newspapers, and losing them meant newspapers often lost touch with the communities they were trying to serve.

I'm not going to go into details of private conversations, but on numerous occasions, I have tried to tell people in leadership at the Daily Guide that Linda is an asset they did not want to lose. I've had my own run-ins with Linda... she wasn't always easy to get along with, but most people from that newsroom generation were not known for their suave social skills. What counted was that Linda had a passion for news, was proud to call herself "nosey," and didn't back down when somebody told her to butt out.

For Linda's sake, I'm glad she was able to stay at the Daily Guide until she passed away. She needed the insurance, but more important, I think she needed a job that allowed her to use her personality for a good purpose. I don't know if she would have known what to do with herself if she hadn't had some role in a news operation.

The Daily Guide has lost an important asset with losing Linda Campbell, and I hope she gets the recognition and appreciation in her death that she probably didn't always get when she was in the newsroom.

Linda was a great help to me during my two years as the Daily Guide editor. I learned to love her and respect her for her knowledge, her memory, her wit and humor, and her willingness to help at any time. I just regret not taking more trout over to her and Ray! May she rest in peace, and may her memory and good deeds live long into the future. My prayers go out to Ray and the rest of the family.

From Ray Carson (Ray Campbell)'s Facebook page:

"To whom it may concern: We plan a celebration of the life of Linda Goodman Carson Campbell from 1 to 3:30 P.M. at VFW Post 3176 in St. Robert on Saturday, Apr. 23. All of Linda's family and friends will be there. We'll play some of her favorite Willie Nelson music and maybe some George Jones, Billy Arr and Ray Carson. Please be there with us."

Mr. Maurina, your post was a wonderful and loving description (and tribute) of the sweet Tigress, Linda Carson-providing me with endearing and impressive insights on one smart cookie and a helluva girl! Even though I have known her for 30 some-odd years, the special, powerful impressions and experiences that you [and others] have lovingly shared have filled me with delight and a much-needed smile. Admired and adored, memories of her sincere kindness, contagious laughter and powerful spunk and persistence will never fade. This little corner of the world will miss her deeply.
