North Korea's military vowed a new and unusually specific threat to its neighbors, saying it would reduce South Korea "to ashes" in less than four minutes.
The statement, released Monday when programming was interrupted on North Korea's state TV by a special report, comes amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula.
Earlier this month, North Korea was unsuccessful in a long-range missile launch, prompting worries that North Korea may conduct another nuclear test. South Korean officials say new satellite images show that North Korea has been digging a tunnel in what appears to be preparation for a third atomic test.
According to the Associated Press, the statement from North Korea was unusual in promising something soon and in describing a specific period of time.
The North Korean military threatened to "reduce all the rat-like groups and the bases for provocations to ashes in three or four minutes, (or) in much shorter time, by unprecedented peculiar means and methods of our own style."

Seoul is in artillery range.  tactical nukes would devestate the the place.  2d Division, is cannon fodder in such and instance.

And yet the current administration thinks it is wise to cut military spending.  If not with N Korea, there will be other conflicts, wars, disasters, let's not have to build up our forces when we need them.  Best to have them already on board and ready to go.

that has been a hotspot longer than the middle east. the dmz is the most heavily defended in the world. the south takes the north serious. I don't believe the north will attack. sabre rattling and propanda is very common there. if they do it will be short and will not go their way. they cannot fight any sustained war, their resources are in too short supply.

This is a true statement.  Anyone who has ever been there knows that even if the North were to make it across the DMZ they could never penetrate more than 1/4 mile into the south before they were stopped and then annihilated by our Air Force.  Now the threat of a rocket (or catapult) or artillery attack is a real threat as Seoul is within range of the Northern pieces.

We moved all our command and controle to Camp Hunphreys because Seoul would be gone in less then 24 hours.

It wouldnt be a quick war at all.  China would most likely back north korea, along with Iran.  Im sure there are also countries who would like to take a shot at us with our attrention on asia, just like japan did in ww2 when our attention was on watching europe.
On another note you cant just go around dropping nukes on countries, especially in north korea, because south korea would catch fallout.

The tactical nukes I mentioned would come FROM the North.  We have them too and fall out is minimal.

I don't know if China would really want to lose all the income they are getting from us.

Don't think for a min. that china would not like to see the US in bad trouble. I believe they want that badly and would actually help another country like North Korea, Iran do it.

our forces aren't supposed to be built up during peace times.  you do realize this type of thinking is whats wrong with this country now. the only reason we care about Korea is strategic location. i think this is just another example of our invention bitting us in the butt.

Your type of thinking cost the lives of many men at the beginning of WWII.  People were not trained for what they went up against. Fact is Active duty is VERY low.  Administrations have been using up the NG and Reserves when they should have been using fully trained Active Duty personnel.  While we may not need a build up, we do need to maintain what we have.  Additionally, they could use the troops for something other than NORTHCOM being trained to quell the citizenry when this administration collapses the government

our forces need to be maintained at a level for deterence, but also at a level that can respond to any conflict. read a little history. what happened at the end of wwll? the military was greatly reduced.what happened when nk attacked sk? the north pushed all the way down to pusan before they were stopped. If it was not for the national guard/reserves, korea would have been lost. How many lives did it cost reducing our active forces to a point we could not respond? Unfortunatly many of our elected officials do not read or learn from history.

No flip flop at all.  Some here need to read and understand what has happened historically to our soldiers as a result of democratic cuts to the military.  Budgetary and otherwise.  I can think of many areas where cuts would be beneficial budget wise and to the citizens of this country.  Start with TSA and the perverts who are power hungry.  Get rid of the NDAA portion giving power to unlawfully detain American citizens.  So away wiht the IRS.  Do away with DHS as they are totally useless except to harrass the citizens of this country and fail to address, properly, the illegal immigration through our porous borders.  then we could cut the salaries of the total administration, including congress until a proper budget is passed.  You know the spending has been totally untrolled since 2009.  No budget ever.  And those are just some of the beginnings.  Oh and they could do away with the spy program being used in this country via drones.

You can't see the difference between our military and giving money to company's that payed for elections. Unions don't need money eather when they can spend millions for a persons election campaign. The government should not decide who will stay in business and who won't.
