  • Valor7: I could have worded that better, we talked details, options, the pros and cons of each, in  order to arrive at the best ballot language to present to the voters. Hope that makes this clearer.

Glad to see the time in now right and I for one shall vote yes on the ballot. I would urge all others to do the sameour county is busting at the seams crimewise and no matter how many bad guys we send off there always seems to someone to replace them. The Sheriff's Office needs the help.

DARE growth prompts review

Darrell Todd Maurina

St. Robert police have a problem, but it’s not necessarily a bad problem: too many schools like Officer Crystal Nunn, who was asked to begin a Drug Abuse Resistance Education program at Freedom Elementary School and now handles several other programs at schools on Fort Leonard Wood.

Nunn had worked as a police officer in St. Robert before she left for a suburban St. Louis police agency where she received training as a DARE officer. When she returned to the St. Robert Police Department last year, city officials decided it would be good to use her DARE training to begin a program when the Waynesville R-VI School District opened a new elementary school in St. Robert.

St. Robert City Administrator Norman Herren asked members of the St. Robert Finance Committee what they should do next.

“We started out with the idea that we had a qualified DARE officer and we would use her in the school since it was the first school in the city,” Herren said. “She turned out to be fantastic and we’ve gotten more and more requests to use her.”

That’s good for the schools but not so good for St. Robert police, who can’t use her for road patrol duty when she’s working in schools.

Alderman Todd Williams asked how other communities handle the DARE program; Herren said no other school system in the area has a certified DARE officer and said he didn’t think Fort Leonard Wood military police were now using the DARE program.

Alderman Theresa Cook, who chairs the finance committee and is a Waynesville administrative employee, said she’d check with other cities and school systems on how they handle the DARE program and would report back to the committee.

She is doing a great job with DARE, why stop her?  Shes good for our community, and we need more people like her. Take another look city council. With role models like her in this town we could have less need for police in our future.

She only goes to the schools for presentations, correct?  If that's the case, how much time does it take from regular police duty?  I think if people are responding to a DARE program, let her do it!  I was a student in DARE back in high school and can remember going to a school to talk to younger kids.  It was a wonderful experience that will stay with me forever.  I grew up in Kansas City, MO so I realize it's a much larger area, but that again this takes me back to the question...how much time does it take away from her "job"?  If doing this is preventing drug/alcohol use in ANY way, wouldn't that in turn lessen the time needed on the streets???  Thanks for posting, Rick.

Maybe someone is jealous? I am just trying to figure out why something positive, becomes a negative.

I think it's a great thing and why put a stop to something that will inform kids and hopefully make them aware of the dangers of what could happen.  KEEP UP A GOOD PROGRAM.

I think the Dare program is GREAT, my son loves the Dare dances but Dare was over in November they had their graduation and everything.  Perhaps a compromise of returning her to the road once the program is complete would ok.
