  • Valor7: Yes and no. We talked details and options until we were blue in the face but I never heardbring it over, it was always the time was not right for the issue to pass. Glad to see the time in now right and I for one shall vote yes on the ballot. I would urge all others to do the sameour county is busting at the seams crimewise and no matter how many bad guys we send off there always seems to someone to replace them. The Sheriff's Office needs the help.

By John BachmanNELSON, Ga. ó Every homeowner in a local town could soon have to own a gun or break the law. It's a controversial new plan for the city of Nelson.

Leaders told Channel 2's John Bachman the reason they need the law is because the city straddles Cherokee county to the south and Pickens County to the north.

That, they said, can lead to slower response times.

One police officer patrols Nelson, Georgia for eight hours during the day. That leaves 16 hours overnight when the city is basically unguarded.

"When he's not here we rely on county sheriffs--however it takes a while for them to get here," said Nelson City Councilman Duane Cronic.

That's why Cronic proposed the ordinance.

"Every head of household will own and maintain a firearm," he said.

Bill McNiff lives in Nelson, carries a pistol and supports the law.

"I think every city should do it. I think it should go countywide too," McNiff said.

The Nelson ordinance is modeled closely after the 1982 law passed in Kennesaw.

It requires gun ownership, but allows several outs, like if you're not physically or mentally able to handle a gun, or if you're a felon or have religious objections.

"It's a deterrent ordinance," Cronic said. "It tells the potential intruder you better think twice."

"Why have an ordinance if you're not going to enforce it? What's the point? They just want publicity to say Nelson is a town full of weapons," Nelson resident Lamar Kellett said.

Kellett isn't opposed to having guns, just having the government tell him he has to do it.

"This is big government at its worst. Government mandating what a free individual can and will have in his home," Kellett said.

City leaders could make the proposal law at the next council meeting, which is April 1.

Not the first time this has been done.  What makes it stupid is the fact that there may be some who are not firearms familiar.  And mandating ownership by the government is almost as bad as the government mandating we all turn them in.

Political grandstanding at its worst...
"The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?"

it poses an interesting question; can those who choose not to own a gun be forced to own one; as those who choose to have a gun are being forced to give them up?

Is your home safer when firearms are present? Will your family be safer if you have a gun to protect them? Or will it be more likely to be used against them?

my family is definatly safer with the guns I have to protect them. that became a fact several years ago. I cannot speak for others. accidents do happen, but there have been many articles lately of people successfully defending their home and their families.

Someone that is forced to own a gun that doesnít want it is going to be a bigger problem.  They will end up hurting themselves or someone by accident.
I donít support gun bans they make no sense.  My gun holds nine rounds if I canít kill the intruder with that then I maybe I shouldnít have a gun.  I do not have problem with limited magazines sizes( although if they donít ban them that is no big deal either) or background checks for all gun purchases. I always thought it was strange that I could buy a gun at a gun show or from a person but if I wanted a brand new gun then there was paperwork.  IF you have a CCW then isnít that gun registered, or at least a registry that says you have a CCW?  I was told that people that give CCW classes have to keep the paper work for two years? Do they have to send that paper work to the ATF to comply with any laws on being able giving the class?

what if there is more than 1 intruder? I don't agree with the what the city is doing. but it would not be happening if the 2nd ammendment was left alone. a ccw is a permit to carry any gun concealed. Some states may have a gun tied to the permit, but missouri doesn't. I'll defer to matrs for the ccw instructor stuff, I don't know.
