  • Valor7: Yes and no. We talked details and options until we were blue in the face but I never heardbring it over, it was always the time was not right for the issue to pass. Glad to see the time in now right and I for one shall vote yes on the ballot. I would urge all others to do the sameour county is busting at the seams crimewise and no matter how many bad guys we send off there always seems to someone to replace them. The Sheriff's Office needs the help.

And on paid leave pending investigation.  IN the real world, any of us would lose our jobs and rot there.  This was flat out murder.  The others should also be charged as they were also complicit as far as I am concerned.  That IS the law.  If in the commission of a felony, all perps are charged for the crime.  Except those above the law of course.

I know the majority of LE are good folks.  I also know the bad apples need to be thrown out.  Yet it rarely happens.  Witness the cops in NYC who shot at an unarmed man and hit two bystanders.  I am sure no charges will be pending there.

It is getting ridiculous. Soon everyone will have to have a CCW to protect themselves from the cops as well as the robbers.

That is why I posted this with the added qualifier about the GOOD people working in law enforcement.  I am not into cop bashing as a rule, but this is getting out of hand throughout the nation.

The officer who fired the only shot was charged and is out of jail on bail.

"And on paid leave pending investigation."

Why not?  Lois Lerner has been on paid leave for five months drawing from her $177,000 annual salary for obstructing Congress.  All public servants should get the benefit of doubt.  But seriously, he is being charged with murder and the case is moving forward quickly which is a good thing in this case.

Actually it is not good to have such a prompt charge. He was charged in less than 24 hours after the incident. If you are going to file such a serious charge on an officer or a civilian I would like to see some semblance of an investigation before the charge was filed. From what I can gather this started with a 2:30am car wreck, followed by a 911 report of a possible  attempt to break into a home, followed by meeting with three officers where the party charged at them despite being told to stop, was tasered and did not stop continued to charge a smaller officer. The person was a fair sized former football player.

I have met a lot of 2:30am wreck drivers most had some kind of drug/alcohol impairment. Most sane people do not charge at three officers when told to stop. Most do not take a taser hit and continue to charge.

The officer may well have screwed up and deserves to be filed on BUT

If the tox screen comes back an Mr. X-football jock was full of meth it is going to be a bad day for the prosecution. I can think of several other things that could blow the case out of the water. The point is that if you are going to charge the guy you eliminate the possible question marks before you charge or the defense will do it for you. Then everybody will say he got away with it when in reality he should not have been charged.

Charged or not charged the officer will have to stand for his actions my point is let us understand what happened before we file a charge.

Please remember that the officer was sent to a possible crime in progress and things happened. He did not go to a local store to shoot the first person he saw in a premeditated state of mind.

The story also referenced an AP news story so I am sure more can be found if you look. I never quite trust the early news reports. As a society we seem to demand instant relief from pain, instant news for a complex breaking story, and a host of other instant demands. I have found that "instant" and "accurate" are not the same word.

The police news service allows officers to voice their comments to the story. One such comment from an officer seemed to indicate that there was dash cam footage of the incident that clearly showed the suspects hands as empty but that footage was not referenced so it could be just rumor or it could be fact. Wait a few day's and we will know more. After all just a little over 24 hours ago they said there were three shooters at the navy yard and that turned out to be false when they had time to put the incident together.

I agree that you canít always trust the first report. But to be honest I donít think I would I trust a police only website either.

Yup they only get to report the first news stuff also. A few days later they usually have more in depth articles.
