My father and brother hunted with German Shorthairs -- You could not lock those dogs any where they could not get out of -- and this time of year they were treated like royalty so they'd hunt better.  (don't know if that part worked-- but they kept trying)

Way to go kbohon sounds like at the very least  he was too drunk to know his dog was in the truck. The one I saw was a small gray truck, large cage, two long haired, toothless, hillbilly's. I have seen them before probably the last time I had a dog taken (just didn't put it together) Heck there could be a dog theft ring. I wish we could figure out if a testing lab is paying for these dogs my nephew said they get $40 per dog at some lab possibly St. James

I am going to keep a file on all information that is called in.  I ran the plate and notated the log entry where we could find the information provided by Kbohon if needed in the future.

I don't know how reliable this article is, and it's from 2003, but it seems like some people make big bucks selling dogs for research.  I didn't know some dogs are actually bred to be sold for research.  The dealers liken them to cattle = handbag, deer = houseshoes, ostrich = cowboy boots, etc.  Just a business to them.  It's sad.

Mark, that's almost identical to what I was told ($40 per at St. James) but I can't find any evidence of a lab there on the Internet. I did find that the University of Missouri purchases animals for research and some of their affiliates (Sinclair Laboratory) was targeted by PETA (although the claims sounded exaggerated, it was enough to cause IAMS to cancel a contract with them.)

The article coyote posted a link to says the going price for animals is $250-800. It's just crazy. It sounds like there are an awful lot of dogs going missing around here, and I'd venture a guess that this area is even higher because we have a transient military population that may not be able to take animals with them to their next location, etc.

Maybe that Baird guy has something in this area also I plan to talk further with my nephew and his friends and see if I can get some more info. P.S. there is still a $200 reward for the safe return of my dog!

The mentioned of Iams brings up a whole nuther ball game.  When you mention labs, you think of using animals for testing products on them. Things that cause the animals discomfort or pain.
Many Pet Food companies have either on-site kennels or contract with a reputable kennel for testing their recipies (food product) on.
Royal Canin in Rolla used to have a kennel but gave away all of their dogs a few years back.
Purina had a contract with an aquaintence of mine Northeast of St. James. Not now though.
Any place that runs a business such as a laboratory, ect. that uses animals, falls under USDA jurisdiction.  They have to have paperwork up the yazoo.

That being said, a number of years ago there was a rumor of dogs being stolen and sold to an outfit that used them to test guns and ammo on.
Lets hope to God all of this is just rumor.

Or maybe not.   A thief has no way of knowing the age of a dog he steals, or whether or not it has been spayed. (a female).  So use in a puppy mill may not be where the stolen dog is headed.
I guess if the dog turns out to be unusable, it just gets dumped somewhere.
Too many questions I don't like the answers to.

If the dog is tattooed (for spay/neuter) they can tell, assuming they look. Also labs won't take chipped dogs.

Heard some strange stuff out of Springfield last night.  That's all I want to say on the matter, but I will check the validity of it for my own sake.

Just keep an eye on your outdoor pets, and don't let them out unattended.

I'd rather have facts on this one.  In some ways it sounds far fetched, but it has happened before.  Bottom line, all five of my kids have lived there and can attest that it is an ongoing issue, but it is an issue the media handles very gingerly.

If I can get a 95% reassurance I will certainly post the info.  If not, I don't want to get folks worked up over nothing.

I have no idea who tattoos animals after spaying.  None of my cats were.  But that is an excellent idea.
I have two tattoo outfits, the clamp variety and the bat-tat.  (battery op, writes like a pen)
Maybe I should set up shop and do everybodies pets, huh?
Unless Biscuit wants to.
I think $2 per dog is fair, thats what the kids charge to do rabbits at the shows.

Dr. Hackworth at Best Friends tatoos the spayed and neutered animals.  I think it's $3.00 extra...I can't really remember.  But the mark is the symbol for male or female with a circle around it and line through it.

Cool.  I'll have to suggest it to our Vet here in St. James.
I was thinking that maybe all the dogs should be tattooed, neutered or not.

One draw back I can think of, nabbers aren't going to take the time to look in the dogs' ears right off the bat.  It's grab and run.  Once they see the tattoo, the dog will be dumped somewhere. Maybe we need to post signs on our property "All animals on these premises are microchipped and tattooed"  Who'd challenge that?

That is a great idea about the sign!! I let my little one out all the time without a leash, because he stays in the backyard...i cant believe i should even have to be worried about him possibly being stolen by some jerk! But he will for sure be getting tattoed soon! Thank you for all the good information, i have been watching for something fishy where we live...nothing so far!
