What do you think about the county using the county prisoners to help do the clean up from the ice storm?   During the March 1st Commissioners Meeting, Bill Farnham made note that there was only 4 in the system that might be trusted.    If you agree with them working,  what do you think a fair compensation for their labor to be?

Bluntly stated they will not leave the Jail to work unless I have a Circuit Court Judge's written order that REQUIRES me to do this. I do not have the manpower to guard them. Repeat, I do not have the manpower to guard them. I do not trust them no matter how simple their charge might look. If they are hurt on the job who covers the medical? The four who have been CONVICTED and SENTENCED to jail time might be OK to use this way  but how many would actually work? It has been my experience that most inmates are not too hot on the word work. The bulk of our inmates are citizens who are accused of a crime and presumed to be innocent until they are proven guilty in court. They cannot be forced to work and it might not be legal for them, to "volunteer" for such work.

This is not the Commissioners plan.
Your right,  they plan on using temp help,  but the idea was brought up at the meeting.

I think the Chain Gang should be brought back. After all, prisoners should have to do some work to pay back the community for what they have done wrong, yet, I know they can not be trusted, hence,...problem solved!

I think there is a big confusion with the words Detainee and Prisoner.  There is a BIG Difference. JB is right about...well everything....but especially the innocent until proven guilty part.  Lets make sure that we are not resorting back to the days of the witch trials or the old west. How about we all act like we are from THIS century and use the present day judicial system to decide who's guilty and who's innocent. In the mean time HIRE someone to do the work! No money for that?? Hey, that sounds like a Tax problem. Lets put that on the ballot.
Am I ranting, my apologies. I just feel like it falls back to "judge not, lest ye be judged".

My opinion is...if it's on your property, clean it up yourself.  Out where I live, I swear, if the branch fell on state property (let's say 8 feet from the road) it's going to lay there until it rots because the people who have the house there WON'T clean it up because waaaaa (it's not on my property).  Makes me SO mad because my husband and our 3 neighbors helped each other all spring and never thought it was the state's problem because we all want our place to look nice.  It's a case of liberals wanting the government to do all the work.  In this case, prisoners.  They are there to serve their time...period.  Not run around the county with a chainsaw and slave tools.

Anyone else see the irony in this?

"the bulk of our inmates have been accused....and are presumed innocent"

Um, Imma simple kinda guy, but if that's the case, why are they in jail?

I know, I know, remanded to custody - I just caught the irony, and found it humorous...in a weird kinda way  ;)

I would LOVE to see chain gangs working alongside Old Route 66, but until our department gets adequate resources to do the simple things, this is nothing but a pipe dream.

Again I say...if it's so bad, then why don't the citizens get a group together and clean it up/fix it up/paint it up...whatever.  Of course it would mess up a weekend but it would be better than sitting around trying to figure out how to make someone else do it.

You quote me, but I fail to see how your post has anything to do with me or my 'observation', which was made in good fun - ironic humor, ya know?

Frankly, I don't give a hoot one way or the other who picks up tree branches,

I simply believe that  incarcerated persons should not be a burden on society - they should be required to give back - and work is something they should dread doing - thus one of many good reasons not to go to jail...  But I went on to say in regards to overburdened and underfunded law enforcement departments, prisoners (inmates) giving back in this manner simply isn't going to happen.

I do believe the meaning of my post went right over your head...

I worked in a state prison for some years.  Let me tell you, the  ONLY inmates that worked were the ones that wanted to.  The rest watched TV in their cubicles, lifted weights, and of course connived ways around the system.  Our legal system does not allow the state to work them now.  Very little justice these days.  I agree convicted people should be made to work for their keep.  No work, no food.  Pretty simple.
