I have a 9th grader which isn't far from middle school, she has a trak cell phone to call me in case of an emergency, last year when she was in middle school she did not have one and complained every day because most of her friends had one.  So I know things are different now then they were in our day, that's the point, we weren't inundated with information 24/7, we actually had to wait to see what was happening giving a chance to cool down a little if it was something that made us mad.  Now it is immediate information, and immediate reactions.  I still say a middle school student does not need access to a cell phone or texting capabilities.
When I was young, I wanted to be older.  This is not what I expected!

Well mine does because of medical reasons, but he's not allowed to text or anything and can only call mobile to mobile (cingular) unless it's a night or weekend...so it's not being abused.  It was free with the plan and only adds $9.95/month to the bill too, and I have constant contact with him if needed!

My niece started begging for one at 12 and she's now 14. My dad gave in and got her one and all its led to is trouble. I like knowing she has a way to get in touch with her mom if she needs something but at the same time she doesn't need to be on it 24/7 or texting her "boyfriend" until 3 in the morning on a school night. They can be inforced but most parents give up. I really like those firefly phones where they can only call certain numbers.

most reg phones can be locked to only call numbers in the phone book.   We had a firefly...I didnt care for it because it was a pain for me to use to call out on ( I often forgot my phone or just didnt carry it)  Even if you  know the pin number it took forever to scroll through the #s to dial out.
Both of our kids have cells now.  Text and internet is locked out (phone feature).  I wouldnt have it any other way.  20 bucks/month is just good security for me

I find it hard to believe that waynesville would have Rolla respond to assist but not want the PCSD.  Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

What!?  Why was that?  Seems PCSD would be able to get to Waynesville faster than Rolla Police would.  I would think they'd call in all the local LE before they called the out of town folks.

ok, if something else happened at the same time as this then who would work that??  It is better to have people open isn't it??  I mean you could have people robbing banks,  at least someone was patroling the streets... and also,  PCSD was at Laquey, I saw them there when I dropped off my daughter that morning

I don't know, but remind me to be careful of my english if I ever get interviewed.  'Bubber's language skills are  embarrassing.

Was that kindy police 'show of force' truly necessary? I think it mainly scared us parents and made us commence to fearin' that there must'a been something mighty big to it all--that there was more to it than people was a sayin'. Seems there were lots more cops there than when there was a real bomb threat in that building a coupla years ago. I guess the kids learned something that day.

I read the link JT gave, and at the end of the article some citizens gave their opinions on the 'incident'.  Bubber was one of them.

This statement does seem a bit put on.  The last sentence was almost like in normal english or whatever , but the rest ,  pretty strange.

I found the last comment on the article in the DG interesting on more than one level, but particularly the last sentence.  If it was "never going to happen" did this writer mean as a post script  after all was said and done? Or was the writer stating this as some kind of fore-knowledge based on how these things usually play out around here.  If the later was the case, I'm glad they locked the classroom door and pulled the blinds even if it was at the request of the students.

"response to rediculous2008-04-18T03:40:55
Seeing as I work at WMDS I know more than some of you might. The student did say he was going to do it. It was planned 1 week ago according to rumors, and again stated by the student. It was a 'he said, she said' type of ordeal, but that doesn't change the fact that some things may have been true. It was also planned for the Virginia Tech shooting anniversary. The student and direct witnesses also stated this. I know I kept the doors locked to my classroom, and the blinds closed, due to student request. The child who was behind this on MySpace also had enough intent for the attack although it was never going to happen."

yes one in 7th this year, and yes it is a differnt world and I see  that as all the more reason to have strict limits, the 7th grader has much less freedom than did I at that age.
Do you have middle school aged children?  Things are different now, as I said in my previous post, we don't live in the world we all grew up in anymore...

Law101, I'm not sure that is actually how it happened. But, I do know the Rolla & JETT SWAT teams train a lot and back each other up. I understood the sheriff's dept. went to Laquey to provide police presence there. I think the situation was handled in excellence. Why should county be in town when there are multiple police already here. That is a problem now, that I see. Why duplicate? I have talked a lot about this on this site and few people are thinking about it. Are they really short, or is duplication occurring?

When I went by there later in the day, all I saw was highway patrol. Where was WPD? Did they have someone there all day? Why 4 or more troopers all day long?

I don't understand the worry about which police force was where.  The point is, they came from wherever they could to help in this situation.  Hats off to all who were there to do their jobs.  I'm sure the ones who weren't there were not there for a reason, perhaps needed somewhere else as said above.  What difference does it make who was there as long as some law enforcement people were there.  If may daughter was in a dangerous situation I wouldn't care if Kansas State Police, Lebanon police, whoever, were called to help her as long as someone came.

From the scanner traffic multiiple WPD were inside the school.  I believe they were there all day as I heard normal overnight officers on during the day.

Well, I admit mostly it was because of people wondering why the county wasn't there in force, when it is not their juristiction. If WPD could handle it, then why SO many MSHP? It really was just my (admitedly) clumsy attempt to defend the PCSD. Sorry, I will refrain from this thread. (Well, Maybe)
