What Is A Soil And Water Conservation District?
A soil and water conservation district is a locally organized and locally operated unit of government that promotes protection, maintenance, improvements, and wise use of the soil and water resources within it's county.
A five-member board or supervisors govern each district. Four members, who must own farms in the district, are elected to office; the fifth is an ex-officio member appointed by the University of Missouri Extension Division. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture provides technical personnel to assist the district in it's programs.
What Is A Cost Share Program?
Simply, it offers landowners financial incentives to apply conservation practices they would not undertake on their own. The costs of these conservation measures are shared by the land owner and by the general public in a combined effort to reduce excessive erosion rates and to assure the continued productivity of our soil resources.
Who Qualifies For Cost-Sharing ?
Owners of private land within an established soil and water conservation district qualify. Their participation is purely voluntary.
